We smell a series. Acura announced it would unveil a new sports-car design concept at the Detroit auto show, offering the above teaser sketch as an airbrushed amuses bouche. The proto model will be dubbed "Advanced Sports Car Concept," continuing a thread started at the LA auto show with the radically angular "Advanced Sedan Concept." According to accompanying press-release spiel, the sports-car concept "provides a glimpse" of the next-generation Acura exotic sports car, formerly known as NSX. By continuing not to offer a V8 in its luxury rides, Acura's the holdout among Japanese carbuilders. These days, its V6-FWD construct is starting to look a bit quaint amid the V8-powered, RWD bruisers its competitors -- German and Japanese -- offer. But it won't be for long. Hirohide "I Like Ike" Ikeno, president of Honda R&D Americas, told Automotive News SUPER V8 POTENTIAL is coming to the next Acura RL (though the new engine group won't be available to Honda brand buyers). What do you think? Does Acura need a V8 to compete, or is it doing just fine in its own niche, thanks very much for asking? Hang that chad now.

Acura 'Advanced Sedan Concept' Debuts at Los Angeles Auto Show
LOS ANGELES, Calif. 11/29/2006 --

The Advanced Sedan Concept is the purest expression of advanced design, performance and luxury, highlighted by its powerful, wide stance and deeply sculpted surfaces. The primary goal of this design study was to create a sophisticated, refined sedan with a mysterious presence.
The concept's generous exterior proportions suggest that a large, powerful engine lurks beneath the surface. The exterior lines reveal a sheer, sculpted lower body contrasted with a taut, architectural cabin. Although ultra-modern in its design, the concept retains the classic silhouette associated with a flagship sedan.
Low to the ground, the concept is anchored by large 22 inch front and 23 inch rear tires which are mounted to custom billet-machined, polished aluminum wheels. Powerful brake discs and calipers accent the wheels and large ducts direct cooling air to the components. Bold wheel arches and flares add to the concept's muscular appearance.
The sleek, compact cockpit nestles atop the sculpted body and flows from hood to trunk. For a unique panoramic view, the roof is constructed entirely of tinted glass that shades the occupants while still connecting them to the outside world.
"We wanted to capture the essence of an ultra luxurious sedan but give it a striking, mysterious presence to create a vehicle with a dual personality," said Dave Marek, chief designer, Honda R&D Americas, Inc. "The concept echoes this quality with its clean exterior lines, a wide, stance, high performance cues and key luxury accents."
The hood is accented with pronounced character lines that culminate in the aggressive five-sided grille, which contributes to the sedan's bold presence. The commanding grille is constructed of polished aluminum and features a cut crystal Acura emblem. The narrow headlights also double as air intakes and are positioned low on the bumper, further enhancing the sedan's already commanding 79.5 inch width.
"The front of the sedan communicates power and luxury," explains Marek. "The pronounced hood and large grille communicate performance, while the jewel-like Acura emblem captures the essence of pure luxury."
In the rear, the Advanced Sedan Concept has a flush mounted rear bumper with the high-mounted stop lamp integrated into the center break of the trunk. The jeweledtaillights are pushed to the outer edge of the bumper to further enhance the vehicle's wide and low appearance, while integrated dual exhaust outlets complement the sedan's performance-oriented style.
During the past decade, several Acura vehicles have been designed and developed in the U.S. including the award winning MDX luxury SUV, the innovative TL performance luxury sedan and the all-new RDX turbocharged crossover SUV. Acura will continue the expansion of its U.S. design capabilities with the addition of a dedicated Acura Design Center that will open next year in Torrance, Ca.

Acura is a strange brand. Only now is Honda beginning to figure out what they want it to be, and as the Civic has moved upmarket, it's edged out its more sophisticated cousin. Production ended this summer but there are still a number of them left on dealer lots. We've always liked the RSX, which seemed more grown-up and less boy-raceresque than its predecessor, the Integra. TTAC's Bill Montgomery, with whom we crunched terrain in the FJ Cruiser last month, pens a mash note to the little coupe. Czech it, and then pour out a 40 of Old E for our departed friend. – Davey G. Although our invitation to the big Honda / Acura shindig this week never did arrive (what's up with the lack of love for the Jalopnik, baby? ) -- fear not, we were still able to get you a first-hand look at Acura's new hotness, the 2007 RDX -- via the folks over at Acura of Troy. They held an owner ride-test event and gave us a sneak peek before the curtains opened. We've got the photo gallery below to let you feast your eyes upon all of its turbocharged SUV goodness -- and we've also got a few folks on the inside of the event to give us the skinny on what we'll be missing. Although we're not entirely sure why this all is news, seeing as a bunch of folks with the long leads (hey guys, it's not the length of your lead, it's what ya do with it!) have already dropped the reviews on it -- but what do we know? Y'all asked for it, so here ya go.

AutoWeek has fully outed the 2007 Acura Type S, with the go-ahead from Acura, we presume, way ahead of its originally scheduled reveal date of September 1. Last week, if you'll recall, the Boston Globe accidentally broke the publication embargo, effectively opening the online floodgates for news of the Type S's return. As we mentioned earlier, the Type-S -- the badge is back after a three-year absence -- gets a new 3.5-liter V6 that produces 286 hp and 256 lb.-ft of torque, a firmer suspension and interior and exterior tweaks. That's a jump from the base model's 3.2-liter mill that generates 258 hp. The Type S also gets a new five-speed automatic transmission with a choice of paddle shifters or six-speed close-ratio manual. More pics after the jump.

Oooooh, Boston Globe, you're in trouble! Looks like that story we didn't cover -- about how the 2007 Acura TL was coming in Type-S trim (that's a 3.5-liter V6 with 286 hp and 256 lb.-ft. of torque) -- was embargoed until September 1st. But seeing as information wants to be free (as some believe), this bit seemingly snapped its leash and ran for the hilltops, where it made itself known on hundreds of Web sites. Because schadenfreude, unlike revenge, is a dish best served piping hot, we've got the letter of admonishment Acura sent to the Globe, along with a response -- sent by an anonymous tipster -- after the jump. Of course, in the Globe's defense, we think press embargoes are bullshit, but then we would, wouldn't we?Dear Acura Long Lead Attendee,
It has come to our attention that one of the publications in attendance at the MDX / TL Long Lead last month, unintentionally broke the September 1st embargo and published a story on the 2007 TL.
Whatever the circumstances, we take embargoes very seriously and will deal with the publication accordingly. Regardless of this breech, the September 1st embargo still stands for all information and photography from this event and we trust that you, and your publication, will abide by this date.
As you can imagine, every aspect of the new TL launch, including months of preparation and planning, are geared toward the Sept 1st embargo, and this seriously compromises our national launch plans.
Embargo dates are created to allow all media sufficient time to produce their stories. To all: that was me who had the brain fart and broke the embargo. usually, i do not attend events with such a long embargo time and will stay away from all in future. i have to write two columns per week so it gets fuzzy sometimes. i don't know what the purpose on embargos is, but i admit to brain failure on this one. in fact, am replacing mdx review slated for this weekend with review of model a with drop top. if i have scooped anyone with review of a remake of a car already out there, i apologize, but i assure you, from now on, all honda and acura reviews will run way past when all of you have run them.

Yes! We love Honda engines. Love 'em. Our favorite mill in any car we've ever owned was the 2.7L V6 in our dear, departed Legend. And while Toyota's continuing on its quest to be All-American with its NASCAR effort and running a couple of Lexi in ALMS, Honda's taking on something more Jalopnik-speed with Acura-powered Lola and Courage LMPs, run by Andretti Green, Highcroft and Fernandez. With open-wheel racing in disarray, Formula 1 not particularly popular here, and NASCAR a somewhat impenetrable juggernaut, we're glad that more manufacturers are pouring their dollars into sports car racing. We hope it remains a smart move, both for the sake of the fans and the companies involved. We'll be pissed if you screw this up, Panoz. [Thanks to Ryan for the tip.]

Acura's new small, turbocharged SUV for the young and on-the-go, the 2007 RDX, will be priced in the the low $30,000 range -- the sweet spot for aspiring ad lions and the ladies who do their taxes. The MSRP will be $32,995, with an optional technology package pushing it to $36,495, not including $615 shipping and handling (sorry, Tennessee!). Press release after the jump.
Acura today announced pricing of the all-new 2007 RDX 5-passenger luxury SUV. Making its debut at Acura dealerships on August 10, the 2007 RDX will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $32,995. The performance oriented RDX is poised to bring a new level of driving excitement and enjoyment to consumers seeking sports sedan performance in the growing entry premium SUV segment.
Featuring Acura's first-ever turbocharged and intercooled engine coupled with patented Super Handling All-Wheel Drive(TM) (SH-AWD)(TM) , the RDX blends the best in responsiveness, control and efficiency. The RDX is equipped with a 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve in-line four cylinder engine with i-VTEC valve control that produces 240 horsepower. By adding an innovative variable flow turbocharger, an exceptionally broad powerband with virtually no turbo lag is produced while providing an EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy rating of 19/23 miles per gallon.
"The 2007 RDX illustrates Acura's passion for developing vehicles that can deliver the ultimate in performance, technology, safety and fuel efficiency," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president sales. "For drivers that want the utility of an SUV but demand a sporty driving experience, the RDX truly delivers."
In addition to an exhilarating driving experience, the RDX offers a comprehensive list of standard electronic and convenience features that serve to greatly enhance the ownership experience. The RDX is equipped with a dual-zone automatic climate control system, a 360-watt, 7-speaker Acura Premium Sound System with a multi-format 6-disc changer, XM(R) Satellite Radio and a convenient MP3/auxiliary input jack for connecting popular portable audio devices such as an iPod(R).
The RDX's inherent performance and technology compliments its state of the art safety features. An Advanced Compatibility Engineering(TM) (ACE(TM)) body structure helps protect passengers by distributing collision loads through the body structure, leaving the passenger cabin more intact for improved occupant protection while also making the RDX more compatible with smaller vehicles in the event of a vehicle-to-vehicle frontal collision. Finally, a specially engineered hood and other components help reduce the chances of pedestrian injury in the event of a collision with the vehicle. Inside the RDX, a full complement of passive safety features are found, such as the latest generation of dual-stage, dual-threshold airbags for the driver and front passenger, side airbags for the driver and front passenger and side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor for all outboard occupants.
While the RDX is generously equipped right from the start, it is also available with an optional Technology Package. Priced at $36,495, the RDX with Technology Package enhances the driving experience by adding a 10-speaker, 410-watt, Acura/ELS Surround(R) Premium Sound System designed by legendary recording engineer Elliot Scheiner to create an unmatched listening experience. In addition, the Technology Package also includes several visual and audio communications features such as the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition(TM) and rearview camera, the HandsFreeLink(TM) wireless telephone interface, and the AcuraLink(TM) Satellite Communication System with Real Time Traffic.
The destination and handling charge for all 2007 Acura vehicles is $615.

Dan Neil's back. Right, he never left physically, but if we're being honest (and we pretty much are), we'd been detecting a slight leak from his characteristic wit of late. If his Muse had left the building, she was only out for lattes (or a Double-Double with extra avocado). Neil's prosiness is back, and it's trained on the Acura MDX SUV, which he says, is "perfectly constructed, elegantly engineered and shamelessly underpriced." Acura's marketing speak-speak, on the other hand, is far less elegantly rendered. In fact, so smitten am I by this vehicle that I can only conclude I'm exactly the sort of person it was designed for. According to Acura's psychographic buyer's profile, I'm apparently what you call an "urban achiever." I'm edgy, competitive, and I work hard and play hard. During the weekdays I'm entertaining clients and impressing the boss. Weekends I enjoy an active lifestyle of dating, night life and mountain biking.
Right. Just as soon as I can find my pants.

Spies busted a production model successor to the MD-X concept -- shown in New York earlier this year -- during hot-weather testing in the Mojave. From the shots, it appears the company's pulling out all the style stops: flared fenders a la S-Class? Check. Spanky new grille shape? Check. Third row of seats? Check. V8? Hey, don't get ahead of yourselves. The company says it's sticking with a V6, despite its competitor's eights. Will their gamble on customers' aversion to gas guzzling pay dividends? We'll see next year.
