From the can't-leave-well-enough-alone department comes this story, courtesy of Autoblog. The owner of a $#%@^&illion-dollar Bugatti Veyron has commissioned tuning shop Hennessey Performance to configure a new exhaust system for his bug. Not satisfied with the fine Alsatian engineering that begat the Veyron's stock exhaust, the owner hopes new throughpipes will "improve the power and sound along with possibly saving some weight." The subject supercar is expected to arrive this winter, and the project will likely be wrapped up by spring. No word on price, but by our accounting it's probably somewhere between "hock the Steinway" and "back up the Brink's truck." – Mike Spinelli

De Bugatti Veyron is een knap staaltje techniek, die je niet zomaar tuned door een paar schroefjes wat strakker aan te draaien . Als tuner brandt je je vingers hier dan ook liever niet aan. Daarbij mag het niet eens, want een Veyron koop je alles behalve vrijblijvend.

According to a report in the UK's Financial Times, new US airbag requirements by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration could render Bugatti's Veyron superdupercar illegal to import without expensive retrofitting, sending Bugatti right 'round the drain. The company is crying financial hardship in a bid for an exemption -- it's an explanation many low-volume carmakers use to petition for a temporary waiver allowing them to sell cars that don't meet all safety standards. Bugatti claims developing air bags would add 10 percent to the car's price, which would have a "catastrophic" effect on sales. The new laws require cars to be fitted with "smart" airbags, which can distinguish between children and adult passengers. Only Ferrari has been given an exemption as yet. C'mon, what's an extra $120,000 among bazillionaires?

There's not much more on what's secretly percolating in Volkswagen's Alsace bureau, but World Car Fans is throwing its tilted fedora into the ring anyhow. For a few months we've been hearing about Bugatti's upcoming Veyron-based sedan -- you know, the one with a detuned, front-mounted 8.0-liter W16, producing 950-hp -- which would capitalize on the company's success in the batshit-extreme coupe market. The spy syndicate of Hans Lehmann and associates offer a spec image of what such a coupe-like four-door would look like. We'll believe such a car when we see it, or, more likely, when we read a thousand column-inches of hyperbole about it from A-list British and American magazine editors. Lucky sods.

Yes, we're spoiled here in Metro Detroit. Every day, and double on Shabbos, there's some kind of a car event or auto show. But one of us had the opportunity to check out the Concours d'Elegance just down the road from us on the grounds of Oakland University's historic Meadow Brook Hall, and let's be frank -- it was boring as hell. Yes, the 300 or so cars were most definetly amazing, but as one Jalopnik reader told us, after about 45 minutes you've seen all the cars and you're wondering what's next. We did manage to catch a few real diamonds amidst the rough, one of them being the car you see below in the photo gallery. That's right, we've got a sighting of the W16 engined-beast from the company owned by the folks at VDub. And the "V" is the thing, as It's got 16 cylinders in 4 banks of 4 cylinders -- the equivalent of two narrow-angle V8 engines mated in a "V" configuration -- all to generate somewhere around 1000 hp. So basically, it's one of the fastest and most expensive cars on earth. And here's a photo gallery to show that it doesn't flinch when it comes to looks either.

Considering that Porsche owns a considerable portion of Volkswagen and the company already builds the Bugatti Veyron and the Lambo Murcielago we wonder what the introduction of Porsche's 254-mph GT1 will do to their bottom line. Will they, as Bugatti chief Thomas Bscher decreed, not sell to rappers? Or with the GT1 become the favored supercar of Jay-Zed and the RZA? Either way, this thing is totally automotive crack rock. Speed's got a full rendering produced by the UK's Autocar. Czech it.

The Heads that are of the Piston variety report on a story in this week's Autocar indicating Porsche is going after the Bugatti Veyron with a LeMans-style racer for the well-heeled public. Word is, the GT1 will be based on, but far outperform the Carrera GT supercar, with 950 hp and a top speed of 254 mph. It'll have a new nose and tail, presumably to further reduce lift. The finished product is said to arrive in 2009, possibly with a twin-turbo V10 or worked-over V8.

Een Amerikaan die zijn zeldzame Bugatti het water in liet rijden, heeft dubbel pech. Niet alleen is de peperdure auto beschadigd, maar ook loopt hij zeer waarschijnlijk een bedrag van $2 miljoen dollar in verzekeringsuitkering mis. De verzekeraar beschuldigt de eigenaar van opzet en zegt dat van pech geen sprake is. De toedracht van het 'ongeluk' wordt namelijk weerlegd door een amateurfilmpje dat een YouTube-hit werd. Bugatti's zijn de snelste wagens ter wereld (race-auto's niet meegerekend) en kosten zo'n 700.000 euro tot 1,5 miljoen euro. Van dit type, de Bugatti Veyron, zijn er maar 300 gemaakt. Wereldwijd. In Amerika kun je ze op vier handen tellen. Juist omdat zijn auto zo zeldzaam is, werd de man door een voorbijganger gefilmd. Dit was, helaas voor hem, precies op het moment dat hij zijn collectors item in het water reed. Volgens zijn verklaring aan de verzekeraar moest hij uitwijken voor een pelikaan. Maar op de amateurvideo die het moment van zinken vastlegde, is geen pelikaan te zien.NietsvermoedendDe opname is van november 2009 en is in Houston, Texas, gemaakt. Een passagier van een andere auto filmt de glanzende Bugatti nietsvermoedend terwijl hij er parallel aan rijdt. Dromend zegt de filmer nog: 'Die is op een dag van mij'. Dit wordt al snel gevolgd door enkele krachttermen van ongeloof als hij ziet hoe zijn droomauto vervolgens het zoutwatermeer in rijdt.Dat de Bugatti-eigenaar een economisch motief had voor oplichting pleit niet voor hem in deze zaak: hij kocht de wagen voor 'slechts' $1 miljoen Amerikaanse dollar van een vriend, maar hij wist een verzekeringsclaims voor zeldzame wagens af te sluiten voor $2 miljoen. Indien er iets met de auto gebeurde, verdubbelde hij dus zijn kapitaal.
