Nick here is going to talk to you today about his Buick Regal Grand National. This guy grabbed us as we were snapping some pictures of the black-as-night muscle cars as they were ready to head out and cruise Woodward Avenue, and urged us to take a look at his intercooled piece of motown metal. And we're glad he did -- as he gives us the story of how an intercooler works, and why the Grand National gets attention at the tracks -- and why it should be getting more.

We ran up to the Moose Preserve, a local watering hole north o' Square Lake Road on Woodward Avenue, for a quick drink with a PR maven from one of Detroit's biggest badges, and in the parking lot noticed a gathering of some cars we hadn't seen much cruising from yet -- Buick Regal Grand Nationals, and lo' n' behold, a specialty GNX edition. We felt pretty damn lucky to get a glance at a fleet of the turbocharged performance vehicles that spelled the end of the 80's side of the modern muscle car era. If you haven't had the chance to see one of the GNX sedans up close, let's just say this -- these cars are known for their performance, and more importantly, over-performance as the under-rated GNX outpaced the factory's power claims: 0-60 mph in just 4.7 s with a 13.4 s/104 mph quarter-mile. According to folks out in the lot last night, these numbers made the GNX the fastest production sedan ever built. Although there was only one GNX there, all of those Grand National's made for one pretty sight on a Wednesday night before the Dream Cruise.

Na de derde dag van het Buick Open gaat Tiger Woods alleen aan de leiding. One of the reasons we've been so hard on GM's Buick division as of late is that we once loved it so. The classic '50s porthole cars, the ridiculously sexy '60s Rivs, the pure, unadulterated awesomeness of the '70 GS, and of course the question-my-blackness-and-I'll-bunch-your-fucking-eye-out Grand National and GNX, which took the humble G-Body platform to spooled-up stratospheric heights of Saturday-nights-on-the-strip coolness. We sold our '70 Skylark eight years ago, and there's not a day that goes by that we don't miss that car. But here, friends, is a reason to find yourself a T-Type and get wrenching.TA Performance, long stalwarts of Buick V8 enhnacement, has released an aluminum Buick V6 block designed to handle some serious power. Add a couple of turbos, and this sucker'll make 700 streetable horsepower. Built by Kenny Duttweiler, the stroked mill displaces 265 cubic inches and weighs a mere 300 lbs -- and that's including the turbocharger. Hell, a year ago, we were pushing 250, and a turbo Buick motor pumps out a lot more power per ounce than a fat Davey G. Now somebody find us a G-Body ElCo to stick this thing in. The Cannonball will never know what hit it.

Chris Doane, a particularly- crafty minion of Brenda Priddy's empire, snatched these photos of the production Buick Enclave during testing. We checked out the concept in Detroit, and were actually fairly impressed by it, and according to the kids who know, the production model will be very close to the concept. However, our favorite line in the whole bit at Cheers & Gears is "As with its sister Lambdas, it will feature GM's High Feature 3.6l V6 engines at rollout with a UV8 option in a likely 'Reserve' or 'Super' trim for MY2009," which assumes that Buick is targeting the empty-nester lesbians with a wide social network that'll soon be flooding the marketplace.

What's going on here? Edmunds Straightline blog is convinced this V8-powered sedan is the "Super LaCrosse" they reported on back when the French Canadians were still snickering about the model's inadvertant reference to onanism. Now, they say, a test mule spotted in Michigatz is the one, complete with Impala SS wheels and eight cans under the hood. Word is Buick will add the V8 LaCrosse Super early next year as an early 2008 model, with GM's 5.3-liter V8 under the hood (that's four portholes to you, gramps).

We, like Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert, have a fear bordering on terror when it comes to bears. The thought of what happened to the owners of a vintage red 1964 Buick convertible this holiday weekend over in Lake Tahoe gives us the chills. A hungry bear cub decided a little pick-a-nick basket was the way to go, and sat down in the back seat for a lovely little luncheon of barbeque-chicken-and-jalapeno pizza -- and then washed it all down with a swig of Jack Daniels, Absolut vodka and tonic and a beer the bear snagged from the cooler. Let's be clear here folks -- we don't care how much you don't want to finish that pizza -- stop feeding the bears! It only encourages them. And as we can see, they're now willing to do just about anything to get what they really want -- our liquor.

Honestly, while we were at this year's North American International Auto Show, we would see Lucernes as part of GM's hospitality fleet while out catching frostbite and giving ourselves cancer (stupid cigarettes) and mostly just thought, "Wow, what a Passat-like rump." And then, while up in Sacto for Easter, again outside giving ourselves cancer, we spent some time walking around a family friend's recently purchased Lucerne and thought, "What the hell have they done to the brand which provided our friend Peet with his '72 Electra Land Yacht that looked so bitchen with an Obituary sticker on the bumper? The brand the provided us with what our ridiculously pretty friend Sarah called, 'Dave's Fresh Riiiiiide?' We swear, portholes or no, Buick's brand DNA, much like Luca Brasi, sleeps with the fishes." TTAC's Sajeev Mehta agrees.
