If this China-market Cadillac STS -- caught cruising in the Western states -- indicates what's to come, the next Cadillac STS is going under the knife for the 2008 model year. The rehabbed grille furthers the complex meshworks introduced with the latest Escalade, and hearkens where the CTS's face is headed. Clear taillights and more chrome fittings also appear to be new Caddy tropes. The question is, will the new ads promoting the STS as an ironic cruiser for thirty-someting hipsters hit the mark, or will the STS retain its avuncular stodginess? Spies appear to have bagged and tagged a test model of the next Cadillac CTS-V -- obvious to a photog who can pick the whine of a supercharger out of the surrounding ambiance. The Car Connection notes the bubble on the hood, fat meats and more obviously performance-oriented exhaust as evidence of the test CTS's V-ness. So what of rumors of a naturally breathing CTS-V? Could this be a manner of CTS-VX, sharing a supercharged V8 with the Corvette Stingray (or whatever), which would mean a 600+ horsepower super Caddy? Now we're just getting crazy. – Mike Spinelli

According to Automotive News, the Counts of Cadillac are working up new versions of the successful CTS -- just as BMW does with the 3-Series and Frito-Lay does with its chips. The paper reports GM showed dealers a fastback coupe and a crossover based on the CTS, and a third varient could be in the works. It's all part of Big Jim Taylor's push to expand on Caddy's success by stretching the brand until it cries "Saville!" GM's board has yet to approve the CTS models, but Taylor is optimistic. Normally, we'd say such unbridled expansion is a sure way to dilute a brand. But in Caddy's case, we say full steam ahead -- there's plenty of space still to maneuver. CTS-amino, anyone?

Here's one from the back burner. According to Edmunds Inside Line, Cadillac's plans for the BRX crossover may be even closer than we'd thought. Cadillac's general manager, Jim Taylor said the sub-$30,000 crossover is being considered, and supplier sources indicate the car's coming in mid-2009. Originally thought to be a wagon based on the Epsilon platform, word now is it'll share the Daewoo-developed Opel Antara / Chevrolet Captiva / Saturn Vue small-crossover architecture. Edmunds also reports Cadillac is bringing its rest-of-world small model, the BLS (above), to North America. Hmm, after all that re-branding, Cadillac's downmarket aspirations may be cause for alarm, especially since the company's battle cry should be Remember the Cimarron!

GM wants you to know that despite decades of treating car interiors like the waiting room at Sears Auto Center, its cars' insides have become very, very important. That's why today that company's pounding the media drums regarding the interior of the 2007 Cadillac SRX crossover -- how it's been completely redesigned, rendered by a new cut-and-sew process that uses high-tech machinery to make hand-hewn fittings possible in large-scale production, and accented using Sapele Pommele, an exotic wood from East Africa mainly used to make guitars and hookhas. One interesting step is how they've been able to avoid cheap plastic junk to cover the cars' air-bags -- a common source of amusement. Is Volkswagen quaking it its Hush Puppies yet? DETROIT -- The Cadillac SRX crossover, critically acclaimed for its innovative design in one of the industry's hottest new segments, now borrows a page from Cadillac's rich and elegant past. The 2007 SRX, launching in August, debuts a redesigned, hand-crafted luxury interior, bringing elegant Cadillac tradition into the modern world of the crossover vehicle.
The new SRX cabin utilizes Cadillac's new "cut-and-sew" interior process that combines advanced technology with the hand-rendered precision of expert craftsmen. Coverings for components such as the instrument panel, center console and door trim are cut, sewn and wrapped mostly by hand. This enables details such as decorative French stitching, and the near elimination of gaps and seams for a superbly tailored appearance. This is the same painstaking process applied to Cadillac's limited-production STS-V and XLR-V models, bringing old-world craftsmanship into the heart of the luxury marketplace.
"The SRX is the latest and most complete example of our new approach to interiors, blending advanced technology with the hand craftsmanship that was once, and is again becoming, a Cadillac trademark," said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. "This new interior adds to SRX's compelling package of design, performance, luxury and value, within the practicality of a crossover vehicle."
The 2007 SRX's redesigned cabin is more inviting and luxurious, with softer surfaces, new flush mounted switches and controls, and enhanced storage. The streamlined new design features a clever "hidden" storage compartment on the passenger side of the instrument panel. The wood trim on the passenger side deploys to reveal a surprisingly wide added storage bin above the existing glove box.
Another example of the detailed execution of SRX interior is also found on the passenger side of the instrument panel. The now-universal use of front air bags on new vehicles normally requires a visible "door" or opening in the dash. The hand assembly of SRX's instrument panel enables the passenger front air bag to be invisibly concealed. Craftsmen use a technique called "skiving" to carve tiny perforations into the reverse side of the material, through which the air bag can deploy. This eliminates the conventional plastic cover and the corresponding gaps seen on nearly all other vehicles.
The wood trim on SRX envelops the cockpit, starting on the rear doors and continuing to the front doors and through the instrument panel. The optional trim uses a particularly rich authentic wood called Sapele Pommele. Sapele (sa-pell-i) is an exotic wood from East Africa , rarely used on luxury cars, more often favored by makers of fine home furnishings and high-end acoustic guitars.
SRX's in-vehicle electronics and entertainment also receive a major enhancement for 2007. The renowned Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround â ˘ digital audio system is available as an option for the first time on SRX. The previous Bose system that had been optional now becomes standard. Also, SRX will offer a "theater" package consisting of Bose â ˘ 5.1 Cabin Surround â ˘ , DVD navigation and rear seat DVD entertainment. The audio system now also features an auxiliary port for connecting MP3 devices such as an IPod.
Named Car and Driver magazine's Best Luxury SUV for an unprecedented third consecutive year, the SRX luxury crossover delivers outstanding performance. The standard 3.6-liter V6 delivers good acceleration and fuel economy. The 2007 model also adds a six-speed automatic transmission (Northstar V8 models only) and a new Sport model. The Sport model includes a fresh exterior look with body-colored front and rear fascias and optional 18- or 20-inch wheels. The 20-inch wheels are the largest offered on any luxury crossover vehicle.

If there's a road race in history that's cooler than the original La Carrera Panamericana -- a dusty, tequila-and-Lucky-Strike-fueled 1,900-mile trek up the Panamerican Highway from Southern Mexico to the Tejas border, held between 1950 and 1954 -- we'd eat our sombreros. It was a matter of pride for the world's storied drivers, like Phil Hill and Juan Manuel Fangio, to compete in the race, which pitted modified American muscle against unforgiving terrain and manifold-melting heat. It was revived in 1988 as a rally for vintage cars, though the danger and bravado is impossible to recreate. Nonetheless, GM Performance is working up a 1954 Cadillac Model 62 hardtop -- an homage to the privateer car that finished third in the '54 race, at an average speed of around 115 miles per hour. No word on whether the Caddy will compete in the rally, not that it matters. We're sticking with romanticizing the original.

A detail-oriented Wiki reader and denizen of GM Inside News caught a line in the Wikipedia entry for the Cadillac Sixteen concept. To wit:The Cadillac S-Class is scheduled to be released this year. It will be the production version of the Cadillac Sixteen concept car. A coupe version is planned. Is someone (at GM?) seeding Wiki with inside info to generate interest, or is some Wiki editor just more tuned in than most of the auto press. And would Cadillac steal the S-Class moniker from Merc? That'd just seem desperate. [UPDATE: The Wikipedia community edited it out. Spoil sports.]

After marketing director Liz "The Crusher" Vanzura had moved across GM from Hummer to Cadillac earlier this year, she came off the top rope and did a figure-four leg lock on Leo Burnett Detroit. Slicing the bux-ous Cadillac account in half, she gave a portion to Boston's Modernista!, an indie upstart agency that had done the impossible on Hummer's brand -- refiguring it to attract urban women. Now, GM reports Modernista! will take over the entire account, with an eye toward expanding Cadillac's appeal from its current base (old white guys and young black guys) outward to encompass new demos, presumably more women, young white guys named "Jeff" and black marathon runners who volunteer at health-food co-ops. GM also wants us to know that Burnett will still be handling Pontiac and several other divisional accounts. So be it.

GM's Chairman of Vice (or something like that) Bob Lutz has assured critics and fans alike that GM's next generation of interiors will be among best in the industry -- think Maurice Villency, not clearance-tagged at Target. One of the most highly anticipated among the next wave is the Cadillac CTS, which those who've seen it say will have an interior that's a cross between the Doge's drawing room and the cockpit of a stealth fighter. At least one shot of the next CTS's interior surfaced recently, providing the remotest glimpse of what's to come. The verdict: hard to say.

Maximum Bob gave us a quick upskirt view of it on "60 Minutes," now the next-gen Cadillac CTS has shown up in the viewfinder of car spies. The '08 Caddy is said to have a more dramatic, aggressive interpretation of the brand's Art and Science design vocabulary, handed down from the ancient Temple of Enoch Light (Google it, kids). Word is, we'll also see the fruits of GM's new emphasis on interior quality. Is this the one that'll make Cadillac a truly world-class luxury competitor? Only all the insider journos who are sworn to secrecy know for sure.

En de bedoelingen waren nog zo goed. Het Amerikaanse General Motors had de Cadillac BLS speciaal voor de Europese markt ontwikkeld, maar tot nu toe lopen we niet erg warm voor deze (misschien toch nog iets te) Amerikaanse auto.
