Okay, so we couldn't help ourselves. Sly puts the rock to the casbah in his Fitty Merc, and manages to blow up a Ford pickup and knock over a lot of trash cans. And of course, this chase is the setup for the classic aftermath-of-climax-carnage exchange that begins, "Well, I'd like to get my car replaced," and ends "Sorry Cobretti, it's not in the budget." Luckily, Cobra found his own transportation in the form of a rubbed-out thug's motorcycle. We simply don't know if it's possible to count the ways in which we love this film. – Davey G. Johnson

So what if this chromed Shelby Cobra replica was mere eye candy in a garage-floor supplier's SEMA booth. Someone had to strip and high-polish the thing, and make sure the plastic parts were properly mocked and coated for maximum effect. Maybe it's not even close to tasteful, and would likely be wanted for murder on South Florida highway in August. But radness comes in all sizes, shapes and level of retina threat.

The NavOne has a relatively huge 5-inch 320x240 display, an easy-to-use interface and offers clear and accurate directions. It also gives you real-time traffic reports and lots of configurability. Type in those addresses with a QWERTY virtual keyboard, and it's off and running, telling you where to go with a sexy female voice. She doesn't know street names, but gives you plenty of warning when it's time to turn, rerouting you around traffic and telling you about 7 million points of interest. But the NavOne was cheap-looking with its plastic chrome trim, and bulky, too, at 1.3 pounds—certainly not one you'd want to carry around in your pocket. Even so, we liked it anyway. Don't be scared away by its $1000 list price, you can find one for $580 on the street, or spend about $80 less for the model 4000 without those handy real-time traffic reports.

Mio C710 DigiWalker
This Mio GPS unit is the most versatile of the bunch we tested here. It not only gives you clear directions on its 3.5-inch screen but it's a respectable movie and MP3 player, too. Its GPS unit is highly capable, loaded with 5 million points of interest and a sensitive touchscreen that gives you a choice of four dynamic data sets at the bottom. It was the only unit in our test group that showed us our altitude, nice to know we were climbing some of the big mountains out West. In addition to its GPS capabilities, it also works well with Bluetooth cellphones as a caller ID device, and it has an unusually responsive dual-duplex speakerphone as well. It can also give you live traffic reports, but too bad its GPS unit doesn't work when you're using it with your cellphone. We also wish it had a QWERTY keyboard—it's Alpha all the way, which we find rather awkward. Even so, everything this DigiWalker attempts to do, it does well, plus it's highly portable and will fit easily in your pocket. It's $600 on the street.

Honda Civic Hybrid Factory-installed GPS Navigation System
This one's built-in to the Honda Civic hybrid, and offers your choice of male or female voices, a huge 6.25-inch screen, and near-perfect interoperability with the Civic Hybrid's highly capable sound system which even has XM Satellite readiness. Its maps are upgradeable once a year, but the 2006 model has shown us a few blind spots on roads it should know about. A neat trick is its voice recognition, where you can push a button on the steering wheel and yell, "Go home!" to the dashboard, and its voice will politely ask you if you'd like to go home. It has a QWERTY keyboard and tells you how long until you get to your destination. Too bad it doesn't give you a choice of 2D or 3D maps, staying with 2D and popping up a close-up when it's time to turn. It's an option that'll cost you nearly $2000; see if you can haggle a lower price with that car salesperson.
Garmin StreetPilot c550
This was the easiest unit of the bunch to use, and although its voice was somewhat robotic, it actually made attempts at speaking the street names. Sometimes this was rather comical, but it came in handy. Besides giving you the most accurate and complete directions we've seen, it can also play MP3 files and sync up with your Bluetooth telephone as well. Its 3.5-inch LCD display hits the sweet spot between portability and large-enough size, and its touchscreen gives you just the right information, and it's plenty sharp, too. Its live traffic information antenna is integrated into its cigarette lighter adapter, and it smartly reroutes you around any traffic slowdowns or accidents. Too bad it also has just an alpha keyboard—no QWERTY here—but that was about the only flaw we found. Best of all, this Garmin StreetPilot c550 passed the ultimate test: I handed it over to my lovely but non-gadgety wife for an evening, and she and all her friends were able to use all of its features without instruction on a ladies night out, finding their way home without incident even through the fog of questionable sobriety. Bravo, Garmin. It's a pricey $700, but if you're looking for a cheaper unit with similar capabilities, consider the StreetPilot c320, a similar unit without traffic data, MP3 player and Bluetooth capabilities.

What do you get when you stick an Englishman behind the wheel of a berzerker German interpretation of an iconic American adaptation of a British sports car? How do you handle an English country lane in roadster with 12.9 liters of V8 (780 ci) under the hood, a billet crankshaft the size of Martin Short and more torque than the 7th Armored Division? Downtown Birmingham was chock full of fun during this weekends Woodward Dream Cruise, whether it was two of the Big Three getting their exnibitionist shwerve on or just sitting back with burgers from Hunter House -- fun was had by the tens of thousands. But if you looked closely between the two tall apartment buildings towering over the corner of Woodward Ave. and South Old Woodward, you'd see something really cool -- the Great Lakes Cobra Club annual meet, one of the largest showings of Cobras anywhere with usually over 80 replicas in attendance -- and even a couple of real ones! Although this year the morning rain, as well as a lack of parking, cut numbers to around 60, it was still an impressive sight seeing all of Carroll Shelby's Ford V8 masterpieces sitting there in the summer sun of the late afternoon.

De musici zouden medeschuldig zijn geweest omdat zij de massa zouden hebben opgehitst.
Vechtpartij
Het besluit leidde tot tumult en tot een vechtpartij op straat voor de rechtbank, waar zich honderden nabestaanden van de slachtoffers en fans van de rockband hadden verzameld.Alle veroordeelden blijven vooralsnog op vrije voeten. Zij moeten eerst besluiten of zij in hoger beroep gaan.Het vuur eiste zoveel slachtoffers door het brandbare interieur, defecte brandblussers, geblokkeerde (nood-)uitgangen en andere overtredingen van de veiligheidsvoorschriften.

Cobra-beeldhouwer Shinkichi Tajiri overleden
SITTARD - De Amerikaanse kunstenaar van Japanse afkomst Shinkichi Tajiri is in de nacht van zaterdag op zondag in zijn woonplaats Baarlo overleden. Dat heeft zijn familie zondag bekendgemaakt. Tajiri, bij wie begin 2007 een tumor in de alvleesklier werd vastgesteld, is 85 jaar geworden.Tot Tajiri's bekendste werken behoren de vier monumentale gietijzeren Wachters op de stadsbrug in Venlo, die koningin Beatrix twee jaar geleden onthulde. Inclusief de sokkel zijn die beelden, waarin de kunstenaar zijn aversie tegen agressie en geweld verwoordde, 9 meter hoog. Later dat jaar werd Tajiri benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw.
Cobra
Tajiri, een van de weinige beeldhouwers van de Cobragroep, woonde sinds 1962 op Kasteel Scheres in Baarlo. Hij heeft in de gehele wereld tentoonstellingen gehad en vertegenwoordigde Nederland op de Documenta in Kassel en de Biennale in Venetië. Zo exposeerde hij in 1949 met Cobrakunstenaars in het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1959 richtte hij met Wessel Couzijn, Carel Visser en de vorig jaar overleden Carel Kneulman de Groep A'dam op, die kunst maakte die verwant aan de Cobra-Groep was. Tajiri maakte niet alleen beelden, maar was ook actief als schilder, fotograaf en filmer.
Protest
Tajiri verliet in 1948 de Verenigde Staten uit protest tegen de behandeling van de Japanners in dat land tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In 1956 verhuisde hij met zijn tweede vrouw, de Nederlandse beeldhouwster Ferdi Jansen, naar Amsterdam. Zes jaar later verhuisde hij naar Baarlo.

AMSTERDAM - Een getuige die pas na de veroordeling van 'topcrimineel' Henk R. in de Verenigde Staten naar voren is gekomen, pleit de Nederlander vrij van de vermeende xtc-smokkel waarvoor die in Amerika is veroordeeld.
Volgens R.'s advocaat, Mark Teurlings, heeft zijn cliënt daarom heropening van zijn zaak in Amerika gevraagd.
Naar nu blijkt, hebben twee rechercheurs van de Amerikaanse opsporingsdienst DEA deze getuige wel gesproken, toen hij nog in de gevangenis zat. Maar zij hebben zijn ontlastende verklaring voor R. niet aan de rechtbank beschikbaar gesteld, zodat deze niet tijdens het proces kon worden gebruikt.
Boete
De rechtbank in New York veroordeelde R., alias de Zwarte Cobra, in januari 2006 dan ook tot twintig jaar gevangenisstraf en een miljoen dollar boete. Het hooggerechtshof bevestigde die straf in maart van dit jaar.
Een van de belangrijkste bewijzen voor de veroordeling waren de getuigenissen van een stel dat bij de drugssmokkel betrokken was.
Pillen
Zij verklaarden op het proces van R. dat zij de pillen van Tommy A. (schuilnaam) hadden, de man die nu als nieuwe getuige wordt opgevoerd. Zij vertelden dat A. had gezegd dat de pillen bij de Zwarte Cobra vandaan kwamen.
De nieuwe getuige heeft inmiddels bij een notaris een verklaring afgelegd. Daarin geeft hij aan dat hij dit nooit heeft gezegd. A. benadrukt verder dat hij nooit drugs van R. heeft afgenomen en dat hij de Zwarte Cobra helemaal niet kent.
Dossier
Tommy A. geeft in zijn getuigenis ook aan dat hij dit tegen twee rechercheurs van de DEA heeft gezegd. Teurlings: "Deze rechercheurs hadden die verklaring moeten vastleggen en deze ontlastende informatie in het dossier van het proces tegen R. moeten stoppen.
Maar dat hebben ze niet gedaan. Daardoor hebben de jury en de rechter deze belangrijke ontlastende getuigenis niet mee kunnen nemen in hun oordeel over de schuld van Henk."
Dit is niet het eerste incident in de Amerikaanse strafzaak tegen de Zwarte Cobra. De aanklacht tegen R. kwam door omstreden handelingen van de DEA tot stand.
Infiltrant
Volgens Teurlings is de Zwarte Cobra onrechtmatig door de Amerikanen in de val gelokt, door hem met een Nederlandse infiltrant op Nederlandse bodem uit te lokken om aan een drugstransport mee te werken.
Deze opsporingsmethode is zonder toestemming van Nederland verboden. In dit geval hadden de Nederlandse autoriteiten een Amerikaans verzoek hiervoor nog nadrukkelijk afgewezen.
Minister van Justitie Hirsch Ballin gaf in een brief van 28 februari toe, dat de Amerikanen in de zaak tegen R. een keer de verdragsregels hebben overtreden. De bewindsman benadrukte dat het een incident betrof en geen structurele gang van zaken is.
