Building slinky sports cars over Corvette running gear is only a new concept if your idea of state-of-the-art couture is wearing pastel shirts under white linen suits. Any gearhead worth his obsession remembers the early seasons of "Miami Vice" were marked by the presence of a faux Ferrari Daytona body atop a C3 platform. Now, coachworks Anteros Marketing is introducing three new models based on the Corvette C6 (or Z06): the XTM Roadster, XTS Targa and XTR Hardtop. The three cars, versions of a body design recalling Brits and Italians in equal measure, feature carbon fiber engine covers, inner fenders, electric bonnet, and a custom leather interior. Anteros's charter is to recreate and interpret classic sportscar coachbuilding, and it would appear they're doing so -- by way of late-1970s kit cars (not that there's anything wrong with that). Crap, look at that hood scoop. Some new shots of what looks to be a test mule for the oft-discussed, $100,000 "Blue Devil" Corvette emerged in the 'Vetteosphere. Spy photogs recently bagged this highly scooped specimen, which spy Chris "the ear" Doane says could only be powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8. Speculation is that the new super 'Vette, which could be called "SS," "Stingray," "Z07," "Mako Shark," or other construct involving marine life, the letter Z, or a number of Ss run concurrently, will produce 650 hp and use carbon fiber to lighten its curb weight under the Z06's bulk. "Blue Devil" is dead. Long live something else.

Let's face it: Twenty-odd years hence, the 1985 Corvette's rose isn't exactly dewy in the best of conditions. In fact, maybe this eye-tingling art-car sendup is a response to how poorly the '85's aged. At least its owner's priorities are in order.

AutoWeek, deep into its future products predictions, reports on a couple of Japanese performance cars that could redefine the sportscar landscape. The first is the long-awaited, all-wheel-drive Nissan GT-R, which AW says will arrive as a 2008 model. It'll largely be a competitor to the Chevrolet Corvette, immune from Japanese competition for deacdes, and priced in the $60,000 range. From Lexus, the LF-A -- introduced in concept form at the 2005 Geneva show -- will reportedly vault the brand over Porsche in the sports-car wars. To be unveiled in fall 2007, coinciding with the Japan Formula One race moving to Toyota's turf, the LF-A, says AW, will get a 500-hp V8, not the V10 as had been in the works. The price had been reported to be $170,000, placing it in range of Aston Martin and out of the range of all but the most well heeled. Set your calendars now.

Oh, the good old days when cigarettes cost five bucks, gas was $3.00 a gallon and the Corvette Z06 was $65,690. They passed quicker than Lindsay Lohan's born-again virginity. These days, or at least the days to come, will see a price increase for the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 of $4,310, to a cool $70,000. All that extra cash goes toward optional OnStar, better damping of outside noise and a new color (pictured) called Atomic Orange Metallic. Can't blame Chevrolet for getting what a bargain the Z06 was and wanting a bigger piece of the action, no?

We're thinking the Corvette counts as just one big gadget, and when we saw the first pictures of the 505hp Z06 model for 2007, we couldn't resist sneaking you a peek. The newest version of America's Sports Car doesn't add a whole lot of new gizmotronics, with its main addition for the 2007 model year being OnStar, a subscription-based tracking and monitoring service that will call for help if your 'Vette breaks down or is stolen.
Another minor piece of newness for the Z06 is the Atomic Orange Metallic color shown here, a similar hue the likes of which we've seen on other Corvettes preceding it. GM has also added better damping of outside noise, which, from personal experience we can tell you is pleasingly voluminous. Going 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds has to be a bit noisy, no?
A little piece of bad news is the new price for the Corvette Z06, whose base price was formerly $65,690, but now it's risen by $4310 to a lofty $70,000. Oh, well, you get what you pay for. Of course, you can get the stock, non-Z06 Corvette for about $20K cheaper. Look for all the new Corvettes to hit the streets in October. – Charlie White

Man, the son of the Intimidator is really thinning out his car collection. First he unloads his Mini on eBay, and now this horrifically-desecrated 2005 'Vette is up for bids on the auction site. Terrible flame job. 20" Asantis in the front, 22s in the rear. Meanwhile, we think it'd be really cool if somebody shrunk Ashanti to 20" tall. Then she could cover PJ Harvey's "50-Ft. Queenie," yelping, "You come and measure me, I'm twenty inches long!" As for Dale's 'Vette? We'd be disappointed in any of you if you actually bid on the thing. Go buy a Z06 instead.

Sweet Peet's been as hard on GM as anyone, but he finds the time to toss some love the way of the Corvette Racing guys on the occasion of their fifth victory in six years at LeMans; a race in which they managed to stave off the Prodrive-prepped Astons, and even more impressively, took fourth overall. Peet's call for GM to use this as a halo, however, will most likely go unheeded. Which is a shame, because with 24 hours of footage to choose frome, it would make for one hell of a TV spot. They could even make it jingoistic and anti-French to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Although his life may have been taken on the launch pad during testing of the Apollo 1 -- Grissom's land rocket lives on. It's a vehicle with a glove-like fit into his lifestyle of adrenalin, danger and speed. It was a 1967 Corvette 427/435, specially modified with a 4:56 rear end to really make it lift off in those 1/4 miles. The car's wandered through owners for the past 30 years -- and now can be yours. Our friends over at CorvetteBlogger dropped us a tip that the 'vette is now up for sale on eBay. So if you're either a Corvette or history buff -- and you've got an extra $180,000 to drop -- you can find out if you've got the "Right Stuff" -- or if you're just "Hangin' Tough."
