Dodge's Hornet concept totally has the X-factor -- most agree not building it as a global B-segment car would be like Lee Iacocca killing the Mustang. It's got comfortably radical styling, C-segment roominess and windshield wipers (most concepts don't have 'em -- go ahead and check). AutoWeek reports Dodge is likely ready to go with it, after a few details are ironed out. First, how will the US market for small cars shake out? Second, who will be its production partner, Mitsubishi or Volkswagen? Third, can it bring it to market without losing its off-kilter appeal? So many questions, only four years till the end of the decade.

The guys at Allpar have updated their file of whispers on the next-gen "ZB" Dodge Viper, which is expected to roll out early in 2007, but skipping directly to the 2008 model year. According to an unnamed insider, the next Viper will have a "whole new front end that's sharper and more menacing" as well as the McLaren-Tuned V10 from the ASC Diamondback Viper, a rumor substantiated by AutoWeek earlier this year. A debut of sorts is reportedly planned for this fall in Vegas (where else?).

The Dodge SRT-10 pickup may haul tons of ass off the line, but it sure is sluggish getting off the lot. A report, cited by Winding Road, indicates Dodge will discontinue the 500hp, V10-powered Ram at the end of the year, owing to sales of only 2,000 units. Dodge hasn't confirmed the report, but we think we just heard a glacier weeping with joy. [Thanks to Damon for the tip.]

Get your motor runnin' muscle car lovers -- there's gonna be a new horse in town. Chrysler Group Prez and CEO Tom LaSorda announced before today's NASCAR Pepsi 400 the Dodge Challenger will be returning to the streets in 2008 as an '08 model. No word yet on what the engine'll be -- or what the pricing will be -- or really much of anything else. We do have all of the usual concept photos and screen-caps of today's event -- and umm...yeah...that's about it. But since there's such a short timeframe here from concept to street, we're assuming it can't be too different -- the boys and girls in Auburn Hills just don't have the time.

We shit you not, but at one point, while attempting to say something, Tom LaSorda totally hijacked and ran off with Homsar's famous "AaAaAaA..." Other highlights? A random appearance by Anthony Edwards, who got flustered when Richard Petty gave him crap about being an open-wheel guy. Kasey Kahne? Boring as hell. Eric Ridenour did okay. But the most offensive part of the whole thing was the bit where TV commentator Mike Joy was discussing Chrysler's NASCAR history at Daytona and checked the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 by name, but referred to the Plymouth Superbird as "The Superbird Daytona." No mention of Plymouth. It's like Plymouth was Chuck Cunningham or, er something. Meanwhile, they should hire an actor to play LaSorda at all future appearances. Saying "Not the best public speaker," about that guy is like remarking "Manuel Noriega really doesn't have the best skin."

Maximum Mopar Day continues with a look back at the Dodge Ram 50 (known as the D-50 in '79 and '89). The 4x4 Power Ram 50 was sold from 1982 onward, and here's something we totally forgot about. For a while there, Plymouth had its own version, known as the Arrow Truck. In our dreams, Don Prudhomme still owns and drives an Arrow pickup, gussied up in the old red-white-and-blue Army livery. Sadly, the Mitsubishi-produced Ram 50 died in 1993, leaving the larger Dakota as the heir to its minitruck throne. We know Bumbeck secretly wants one of these with an overhuffed 4G63 in it.

Who doesn't love the Dodge Charger? You readers voted it runner-up to the Ferrari F430 in Jalopnik's Car of the Year poll. Musclecar fans dig it, the DUB crowd adores it, and wherever you go in one, somebody asks you, "That thing got a Hemi?" Apparently, thieves love it so much, they've been stealing examples right off of dealer lots in Indiana, replacing the VIN plates and selling them as used. In one instance they also made off with $40,000 worth of tools compatible with the LX cars. You're brazen, you thieves. Brazen. In the mean time, the fuzz are telling prospective buyers to pick one up from the dealer.

So a couple of the boys from Automobile Magazine were heading out in the 2007 Dodge Magnum fitted with the for-law-enforcement-only police package yesterday at the Chrysler Proving Grounds. Recognizing an opportunity for a ride we've usually only seen after a night of binge drinking, we asked if they minded a ride-along as they played a bit of Cops n' Robbers on the ride performance track. Also, they almost let Wert play with the siren -- almost. Have fun with the video, and then click the jump to read a bit more about Dodge's po-po power wagon.
Performance
The standard edition of the Dodge Magnum police package is a 3.5-liter High Output V-6 engine with 250 horsepower and 250 lb-ft. of torque. But this was a press day, so there was nothing standard on this ride -- it had the 5.7L HEMI V8 with 340 horsepower when running at 5,000 rpm and 390 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The wagon's 18" wheels handled the non-simulated road sections of the course smoothly, and handled beautifully in the turns. Although it really took a beating from the different road sections of the course -- it handled them much better than the video above makes it out. Heck, even in the back seat, sans seat belt -- we felt pretty darn safe.
The Back Seat's With Us, Leather
One of the interesting items we noticed while riding in the back seat -- the rear bench isn't plastic, it's leather. That's got to be pretty hard to clean if you've just picked up a drunk frat-boy at a bar and he pukes up in the back seat. But, at least the floor is plastic/rubber, so that should be pretty easy to hose down.
The Sirens Make Pretty Noises
That they do. Although they did get pretty annoying after a while, we still found ourselves wanting to take it home and install it on my car -- but no matter how hard we pulled, we couldn't get the independently switched white and LED red dome lamp off the top of the car. Oh well.
Help, Let Me Out!
Like a child, we needed to be let out of the back seat of the police package Magnum -- but it was well worth it. We'd gladly take it off of Dodge's hands the next time they go out of town. Or just let us know when you'll be replacing the Auburn Hills fleet -- we'll gladly buy it off of eBay.
