So it seemed like forever since the P990i was introduced. Now the FCC wants every boy and girl in the USA to have this fantastic SMART PHONE. The phone uses Symbian OS 9.1 and the upgraded UIQ 3 platform. It's a tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 phone with UMTS 2100, which will be handy soon when the 2100MHz spectrum hits the auction block soon and gets unleashed via your friendly neighborhood wireless carrier.The P990i has a 2.8 inch touch screen wifi at 802.11b, Bluetooth 2.0 a 2 megapixel camera and QWERTY keypad. There is a full range of email and media player functions as well on the P990i. Jeez, does it take a long time for a cellphone to be approved for US use, or what? Case in point: the Sony Ericsson P990i, which just made it through the labyrinthine gauntlet of the FCC approval process.
In case you've forgotten about this powerful smartphone we introduced to you back in December of last year, it supports the Symbian OS 9.1 and the UIQ 3 platform, it's got a music player on board that supports MP3, AAC and AAC+, and it specializes in push e-mail with a highly functional QWERTY keyboard. Expect to see the Sony Ericsson P990i available stateside next month. – Charlie White

Instead of having two separate screens on a flip phone—one larger inside and one smaller outside—this patent allows one larger screen to rotate to be displayed both on the inside and outside. This means possibly having the screen auto swivel so you can see the same UI when the phone is closed as you do when it's open. It may allow you to dial just from the contact list when the phone's closed, instead of having to flip open the phone to make a call.
The upside is that you can keep your phone closed more often, but it exposes the screen to the elements. Sony Ericsson is also shooting at a broad target with this patent:
"The mobile terminal of the present invention is not so limited and may find utility in other electronics devices and applications...a Personal Communications System (PCS) terminal that may combine a cellular telephone with data processing, facsimile and data communications capabilities; internet/intranet access devices; organizers; a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) that can include a radiotelephone, pager, internet/intranet access, Web browser, organizer, calendar and/or a global positioning system (GPS) receiver; wristwatch keypad devices; and a conventional laptop and/or palmtop receiver or other computer system that includes a display.

Following up the success of the white W900, Sony Ericsson is making their w810i also available in "#FFFFFF" by July/August. Of course, the white will cost more than the current black, since, you know, white paint costs more?

Sony Ericsson has unveiled its first 3G phone capable of supporting i-mode, the internet-on-your-phone service pioneered by Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo and offered over here in the UK by the O2 network. Encased in black, this handset offers a 2 megapixel camera with 2.5x optical zoom at the back as well as a front-mounted camera for video calls, Bluetooth connectivity, 16MB of internal memory, and a Memory Stick Micro slot for expansion options. Sony Ericsson has just announced its first GSM/UMTS phone to support i-mode, the internet viewing/push mail service. The phone itself is pretty decent, with a 2 megapixel camera and support for up to 1GB M2 Memory Sticks. There's also a speaker phone, MP3/AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ support, 3d games, Bluetooth, USB2.0 connectivity, and USB charging.
The press release also says (we think) that the phone ships with the Bluetooth Stereo Headset DS 970, Desk Stand CDS 60, Travel charger CMT 60, and Xenon flash. We'll have to confirm that. – Jason Chen

GadgetCentre has taken the new Sony Ericsson W810i Walkman phone for a ride and came away with more than a glowing recommendation. Sony Ericsson have worked on the small annoyances that bugged its predecessor, the W800i - including a better button layout and retiring the sensitive control stick with a 5 extra buttons in its place. The camera lens cover was removed as well since it was virtually redundant, flicking open whenever the phone slides into the pocket. Slechts enkele minuten na de Ericsson 4 passeerden de Puma en de Green Dragon als nummers twee en drie de finish. De Telefonica Blue van de Nederlandse schipper Bouwe Bekking voer als vierde de haven binnen en moest de tweede plaats in het algemeen klassement overdragen aan de Puma.De negende etappe start op 14 juni en finisht al na een dikke 500 zeemijlen in Stockholm.

Ericsson 3 gestrand door storm
QINGDAO - De vierde etappe van de zeilrace om de wereld eist zijn tol. Dinsdag moest ook Ericsson 3 de strijd staken in de Volvo Ocean Race wegens averij, die was opgelopen in een woeste storm ter hoogte van de Filippijnen. Het Zweedse zeiljacht van schipper Andres Lewander is al de tweede boot die moet opgeven in de etappe van Singapore naar Qingdao. Eerder capituleerde de Spaanse boot Telefonica Black met zware schade. Ericsson 3 koerst momenteel naar Taiwan om daar de benodigde reparaties uit te voeren.
Schade
De Nederlandse Delta Lloyd liep afgelopen weekend eveneens serieuze schade op door de storm. De bemanning besloot naar een baai te varen en daar het schip op te kalefateren. Deze pitstop kostte het jacht reglementair twaalf uur. Nog vijf boten zijn in de race in de vierde etappe. Telefonica Blue heeft de leiding met 500 zeemijlen voor de boeg.
