My first car was a Holden Kingswood. V8 with 5 litre engine. That thing flew! Holden was an Australian company and when I was growing up you were either a 'ford' family or a 'holden' family. Now they have been taken over by GM and are a subsidiary. That's why they look just like the opel, although their reputation in Aus is still a lot cooler than opel is here in Europe.

Ik ben een Holden fan en verzamelaar. Ik kreeg destijds regelmatig folders, brochures van Holden uit Australie, helaas doen ze dat niet meer.
Wie zou voor mij langs de plaatselijke Holden dealer willen gaan en een paar nieuwe folders willen meenemen. Ik betaal je verzendkosten, zelfs als je in Australie woont en je hebt een leuk pakketje!!!!

Why be beholden to GM's global badge-engineering tactics? Here's one from the badge re-engineering department. Just as the JDM-spec kids take domestically sold Japanese cars and refit them in Japanese spec, JHP Vehicle Enhancements will recast a US-spec Pontiac GTO as an Australian-version Holden Monaro -- the car the late model Goat was born to be. The end product not exactly Aussie spec, considering it's still left-hand drive. But then again, there is such a thing as being too Australian (just ask a platypus.) [Gallery]

If you thought badge engineering was a purely American game, check your head. GM's bringing a version of the UK's Vauxhall (Opel) Astra VXR to Australia as the Holden VXR. Never one to leave well enough alone, Holden's HSV performance group -- likely gone dingbat on Aeroplane Jelly, Redback and pie floaters -- worked up the 2006 HSV VXR, unveiled at the Sydney show this week. Powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 16-valve Ecotec-4 producing 237 hp and 236 lbs-ft of torque, the lil' hatch can get from zero to 60 in 6.4 seconds. It rides on 19", 10-spoke alloys and comes with ESP, traction control, ABS and brake assist and Recaro seats. Maybe one day we'll see a Saturn that's similarily equipped, but we wouldn't bet the gee-gees on it. – Mike Spinelli

Seriously. Just go ahead and bring the El Camino back now. When we were in Ireland a week ago, we were at a pub with a couple of Australian girls who weren't necessarily incredibly into cars. But you know what they lamented (without prompting, we might add) about European vehicles? That's right, bwas and grilles, the lack of utes. Now stop mucking about and give us this day our daily El Camino, GM. It's time to stop letting the Australians have the lion's share of your best products. Those lusting after Australia's Holden Commodore super sedans may soon see the objects of their desire in a Pontiac dealership as early as next year. Australia's Drive.com.au is reporting that GM plans to unveil a rebadged Commodore as a Pontiac product at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show. That car will reportedly go on sale later in 2007. The site quotes Maxi-Bob Lutz as saying, "Come to the Chicago auto show and all will be revealed," after calling the fruit of Holden's $1 billion Commodore project one of "the best vehicles GM has produced." It's a speculative leap to be sure, but if the rear-drive sedan did come to Pontiac in such a short timeframe, it would be a crucial show of support for the division's future, which wouldn't go unnoticed among Pontiac fans whose battle cry has become, "Remember the Aztec!" – Mike Spinelli

Shots of the secret E-Series, a super-sport Commodore sedan from Holden's performance division HSV made their way to the Intersplice a week before GM planned, by way of an embargo-date mixup by a government office (Ministry of Speed?). Australian muscle-car watchers have been waiting for the E-Series for months, though we're admittedly not quite up on its backstory (Yozzie, a little help?). The car's expected o have a modest bump in power to go along with its funky-fresh body kit, though the large taillights and huge vents behind the front wheels are the most telling differences from the Commodore. Drive.com.au has the skinny. No word on whether Vauxhallites in the UK will see a version.

"Maximum" Bob Lutz appears bullish on Holden's new VE Commodore SS-V, calling it "a magic vehicle" after driving it just once, according to Australia's Drive.com.au. That bodes well for the car becoming integrated into GM's North American line -- possibly as a replacement for the Pontiac Grand Prix -- something Holden boss Denny Mooney would give his eyeteeth and a case of wallaby for. Lutz recently spent some wheeltime in a production version at GM's Milford proving ground outside Detroit. Holden's reportedly been pitching the $1 billion car Commodore to GM brass as a Pontiac model for the lucrative US market by 2008. From Lutz's comments, the new VE is a hot piece of ride that's forgiving for inexperienced drivers, and that its fit and finish are "still way, way better" than in the US -- setting it up as a high-margin, low volume halo for Pontiac. And that's good, because while the Holden platform will be used in the next Chevrolet Camaro, boss Mooney wants to sell Lutz on the Commodore as a turnkey, upmarket model that would sell at the top of Holden's capacity of 20,000 cars a year. Stay tuned.

What does a billion bucks buy you? If you're GM's Aussie Holden division, it's a kiss on the cheek from the 6.0-liter V8 gods and a rear-drive platform that will affect many more of the General's products. Not enough? It'll also buy into production the Commodore VE SS-V, one of those distinctly Australian muscle cars that does more to get Americans scratching their heads than two seasons of "My Fair Brady." Why, we ask, do we -- the freaking muscle-car capital of the world (if we might be so bold) -- not get similar machines in the states? Don't give me business-case reasons -- give me cars. Aussie Drive lets us know what we're missing.

Sussing why GM doesn't have a serious in-house tuning shop for Chevrolet (or Pontiac, for that matter) cars in the US is probably beyond our pay grade (which isn't saying much at all). But down under in Bizarro America (sorry, mates), Holden has its HSV division, which wields Corvette V8s like Thor's mighty hammerage. They've even offered a car fitted with an LS2 juiced by famed Corvette tuner, Callaway in Connecticut and sent around the world for installation. But enough drooling. The folks at Drive.com.au say they've caught the new Commodore VE in HSV trim -- a model that'll compare to, say a Chevy version of the Cadillac CTS-V on methamphetimine. Just remember to convert from kilowatts; that's Bizarro for horsepower.

DEN HAAG - De gemeente Den Haag scheldt de boetes van Turkse inburgeraars met terugwerkende kracht kwijt. Foto: ANP De reden is dat de Centrale Raad van Beroep een maand geleden besloot dat Turken niet verplicht zijn een inburgeringscursus te volgen.Dat heeft wethouder Marnix Norder (integratie, PvdA) donderdag aan het ANP laten weten. Turken waren de afgelopen jaren verplicht om in te burgeren. Mensen die verplicht zijn een cursus te volgen, maar niet komen opdagen of onvoldoende meewerken, kunnen een boete krijgen.
Opvallend
Nu achteraf is gebleken dat Turken onterecht werden verplicht om in te burgeren, scheldt Den Haag de uitgedeelde boetes aan deze groep kwijt. Het besluit geldt met terugwerkende kracht vanaf 2007, toen de huidige wet inburgering inging. Het gaat de gemeente rond de 35.000 euro kosten.Het besluit van Den Haag is opvallend. Het standpunt van het ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken is namelijk dat al betaalde boetes rechtsgeldig zijn. Terugbetalen is dan ook niet nodig, aldus een woordvoerder.De Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten heeft dan ook nog niet gehoord van gemeenten die het voorbeeld van Den Haag volgen.
Niet meer innen
Het ministerie adviseert gemeenten wel om nog onbetaalde boetes niet meer te innen. De gemeenten Utrecht en Amsterdam laten weten dat zij dit advies ook inderdaad opvolgen. In Rotterdam is dat niet eens nodig, want die gemeente treedt al een jaar niet meer op tegen Turkse inburgeraars die niet komen opdagen. De rechtbank in de havenstad oordeelde vorig jaar namelijk al dat Turken niet inburgeringsplichtig zijn, een uitspraak die later door de Centrale Raad van Beroep werd bevestigd.

Slachtoffers uitgescholden via Facebook
LONDEN - Dertig pagina's van het sociale netwerk Facebook zijn op last van de Britse minister van Justitie Jack Straw verwijderd, omdat gevangenen ze gebruikten om hun slachtoffers uit te schelden. © ANP Dat heeft de BBC donderdag gemeld.Gevangenen gebruikten hun via het lichaam gesmokkelde telefoons om toegang te krijgen tot hun profielen op Facebook, waar ze familie en vrienden van de slachtoffers uitscholden en bang maakten. De minister besloot na een ontmoeting met slachtoffers om de pagina's te verwijderen.Een woordvoerder van het ministerie van Justitie zei duidelijk te hebben gemaakt aan Facebook dat zulke pagina's niet actief mogen zijn, omdat ze erg kwetsend zijn voor slachtoffers en hun naasten. Facebook heeft de pagina's binnen 48 uur verwijderd.
Afstandbediening
Een van de gedetineerden meldde via Facebook dat hij ''misschien wel vastzat, maar niet was verdwenen''. Hij zei dat hij een afstandsbediening wilde ''om mensen uit te doen of te verwijderen als dat nodig is''. Volgens minister Straw is er ook bewijs dat familie van sommige gevangenen namens hen berichten heeft achtergelaten op de Facebookprofielen.Om de telefoonsmokkel te bestrijden, worden bezoekers van gevangenissen verplicht op een stoel plaats te nemen die hun lichaam intern scant.
