SEOUL (ANP-AFX) - Hyundai Motor heeft de export van zijn auto's stilgelegd omdat werknemers al sinds eind juni staken. Dit heeft de grootste autofabrikant van Zuid-Korea donderdag laten weten. De ingreep raakt de productie van in totaal 81.000 auto's.

Management and union officials sat back down at the table yesterday afternoon and plan on sticking it out unti they break the deadlock over a 125,000 Won raise, a new re-calculation of wage scales and the introduction of a salary caste class system. Aah, little Hyundai is growing up. It seems like only yesterday we were pounding our fist on the steering wheel of our '88 Excel (four-speed), begging it to hit highway speed before that oncoming Buick LeSabre cleaved us in twain. Now, according to the Detroit Free Press the company is planning a halo car that would paint the brand with a racing stripe.The sports model would be priced under $25,000 and would likely be a front driver based on the Tiburon, though the company isn't ruling out a more powerful rear-drive model. A decision will be likely within six months, not ironically the same time horizon as the Excel's zero-to-60 sprint. We can't pretend to understand Korean law or politics, because here in the US of A we don't let corporate bosses accused of fraud and embezzlement to just walk the streets. Okay, nevermind that. Hyundai's chairman, Chung Mong-koo, had bond set at one billion won, or about $1 million. Reasons for letting him out range from concerns for the 68-year-old's health to concern over the South Korean economy while Hyundai flails around without a leader. That's right, even though he's accused of stealing money from the company, he's still going to go back to running things. Now that right there folks, is chutzpah. We knew this was going to happen. An embattled automaker that's also the nation's largest and a union fed up with the lies coming from the corporate office ready to shut the mutha down! Only wrinkle -- who'd have thunk the country'd be South Korea and the company would be Hyundai. Unionized workers at South Korea's Hyundai plan to lay down their tools for 12 hours at three of the automaker's factories today in retalliation for rejecting the union's demands for a 9.1% increae in salary, higher incentives and better working conditions. The strike represents 73% of the total union workforce, or 31,934 workers and will result in around $38 million in lost production. De Hyundai Sonata is voortaan ook leverbaar met 2.0 CRDi VGT dieselmotor. Hyundai levert de Sonata diesel vanaf 27.995 euro met een 140 pk common-rail dieselmotor. Binnenkort arriveert overigens ook de Sonata met een 2.0-liter CVVT benzinemotor. De prijs van dit instapmodel (ActiveVersion) bedraagt 22.995 euro.
