The Wiltshire Constabulary sounds like a fine force stocked with reasonable Englishman -- and with an excellent press agent. Soon, constables will be patroling their southwest Blighty beat in a Lexus GS 450h hybrid sedan -- the first such cruiser to go into service. It makes perfect sense: When the bobbies are popping 'round the town, the full-hybrid's V6 engine shuts off instead of idling in front of the chip shop, and the performance figures make chasing down ducktailed cafe racers quick as Bob's your uncle. (Sorry, our frame of reference somehow got wedged into an episode of "The Avengers.") A spokesman for the force says the 341-hp (gas-electric net) car will be used for "varied traffic duties."

Back from a three-day hiatus, on today's Jalopnik Precast, Spinelli and Farago discuss news reports that the Ford family is considering taking its namesake company private. They also consider a hybrid drivetrain for the upcoming Lexus LF-A supercar and wonder if the best thing for Jaguar is to have backhoes and road graters for siblings.

In between sips of the world's finest teas, sweetened with Splenda, the group plots the year's Lexus SC Pebble Beach edition. Will it have special Pebble Beach badging? Why yes! Will it be painted in Tiger-eye Mica, with a camel-tinted leather interior? No! That was last year's model. How about Starfire Pearl, with a passionate Pimento Red leather interior and black birds-eye maple wood trim? Sounds lovely. Will 18-inch G-Spider alloy wheels do? Indubitably. AutoWeek, deep into its future products predictions, reports on a couple of Japanese performance cars that could redefine the sportscar landscape. The first is the long-awaited, all-wheel-drive Nissan GT-R, which AW says will arrive as a 2008 model. It'll largely be a competitor to the Chevrolet Corvette, immune from Japanese competition for deacdes, and priced in the $60,000 range. From Lexus, the LF-A -- introduced in concept form at the 2005 Geneva show -- will reportedly vault the brand over Porsche in the sports-car wars. To be unveiled in fall 2007, coinciding with the Japan Formula One race moving to Toyota's turf, the LF-A, says AW, will get a 500-hp V8, not the V10 as had been in the works. The price had been reported to be $170,000, placing it in range of Aston Martin and out of the range of all but the most well heeled. Set your calendars now.

Sure, in our bicoastal and midwestern locales, we can get fried octopus balls (no, they're just fashioned into balls, dopey), but we can only get a couple of Japanese car magazines. Thus, we look to the Japan-living ex pats at Nihon Car and Bike for updates on the J-buff-book scene. This time, they give us the latest on the upcoming Lexus IS 500, which has appeared in the mags -- in unknown accuracy -- for months. According to one, the specs are as follows: 5.0-liter V8 (2UR-FSE) producing 420bhp (at 5800rpm) and 405 lbs.-ft. of torque (at 3800rpm), and a curb weight of 3714 lbs. Audi RS4 performance at a more than 200-lb. weight benefit? Let's hope the US version's got what the J-spec's got. [Thanks to Zerin for the tip.]

The count: In-dash navigation system with rearview backup camera, heated and ventilated seats, SmartAccess key that unlocks the doors and enables the starter button when you get close, radar assisted cruise control, Bluetooth, and iPod connectivity. Lexus has already faked out the spy community, through which word of a V8 powered Lexus IS spread like Influenza A virus subtype H5N1. Through them, we'd heard the so-called IS 500 would debut at the '06 Detroit show, which came and went without word one that such a car was in the pipeline. Now, the spooks have caught sight of what they believe is the IS 500 in apparent shakedown testing on the Nürburgring. Could Detroit '07 be the venue for the hi-po Lexus S4/M3 fighter? Only agent Ken Watanabe (and a few of his henchmen) know for sure.

Secret Jalopnik agent XK120 infiltrated the Aspen Ideas Festival, where he had an epiphany to take pics of the Lexus LS 460 and 460 L(ong-ass wheelbase) models on display. Lexus, one of the event's sponsors, was also offering rides in its slingshot-y GS450h sedan and RX hybrid to the thought leaders (and the thought-leading groupies who sweat them) in attendance. The LS600h, the company's new $100,000 luxo-hybrid due out in spring of 2007, was absent from the Lexusian stable. Who's idea was that?

We just gave back our Lexus GS 450h tester, which is why we've been sad all morning (more to come on that). The thing is an absolute monster on the road, despite being under the influence of more computing algorithms than the Mars rover. That's likely why Toyota's planning to race the hybrid in Japan's Tokachi 24-hour Race at the Tokachi International Speedway in Hokkaido next week. Engineers say they're looking to gain "technological feedback for future mass-production vehicles," but we say they're just looking to flaunt their junk. You know how catty engineers can get.
