Ford's latest Whey Way Forward cost-cutting tactic, according to Automotive News is to starve the new Lincoln flagship of a V8 engine -- a feature many consider crucial to meet competitors in the luxury market. Instead, the upcoming MKS sedan will get only Ford's new, fits-in-everything 3.5-liter V6 (Duratec 35, or Cyclone), which produces in the neighborhood of 240 265 hp currently -- but Ford plans to "differentiate" the engine in the MKS, likely by maxing out its power potential (twin-turbo anyone?). AN says executives shelved a plan to use the Yamaha-sourced V8 from Volvo's XC90 for eight-pot goodness in several models. Ford's definitely lacking in small V8s for such applications; the question is, can they convince buyers not to care? Advertising Age's Bob Garfield sets the lasagna aside and goes to town on Lincoln's new aspiration-tweaking ad campaign, saying: " It is mind-boggling, in this day and age, with a marketing revolution in progress, that anybody would be so backward as to sling this bullshit. More remarkable still, the commercial is so busy being cinematic and ethereal, it doesn't even give you much of a look at the cars-much less an opportunity to fall in love with them." Right on time, FoMoCo's made the announcements Automotive News reported it would. Late yesterday, the company confirmed it's building the Ford Shelby GT -- a consumer version of the Rent-a-Racer Shelby Mustang GT-H offered at Hertz outlets (in white or black with silver stripes) -- and that the Lincoln MKS concept will go into production in 2008 as the company's next full-size flagship sedan. We're still waiting for the Fairlane announcement, but it'll come before the week's out. More details on the new boldness coming later today. We don't really have a Deal of the Week feature, but dammit if this one wouldn't be this week's if we did. Lincoln's offering $8,000 cash back on the 2006 LS, the brand's fast-fading but still desirable sports/touring sedan. A rear-driver, the LS is built on the same Ford DEW98 platform co-designed with Jaguar engineers to accommodate the S-Type, and for '06 is only offered with a 3.9-liter variant of the Jaguar AJ-V8, producing 280 hp. That incentive brings the base MSRP down from $39,285 to a more manageable $31,285 -- nearly the same as the 2005 V6 model phased out in favor of the new Zephyr. Alas, the cash is part of an inventory draw-down following the end of LS production this past April. Get 'em while they're still relatively hot. WASHINGTON - De Amerikaanse president Barack Obama heeft donderdag zijn politieke held Abraham Lincoln geëerd en hem ''onsterfelijk'' genoemd.  Bekijk video De Burgeroorlogpresident heeft ondanks de toenmalige scheiding van noord en zuid en zwart en blank nooit vergeten dat het land ''in wezen 'één natie en één volk'' is.Dat zei Obama donderdag in Washington tijdens een herdenkingsplechtigheid ter ere van de geboorte van Lincoln tweehonderd jaar geleden. Vermoord Lincoln, de zestiende president van de Verenigde Staten, werd in 1865 vermoord tijdens een bezoek aan het theater. Drie maanden eerder had het Congres de slavernij afgeschaft.Obama: ''Ik ben een speciale dankbaarheid verschuldigd aan deze opmerkelijke persoonlijkheid die op zoveel manieren ook mijn pad heeft gebaand''. Lincoln was afkomstig uit Illinois, de staat die de zwarte Obama als senator in het Congres in Washington vertegenwoordigde. Springfield De huidige president reisde later door naar Springfield in Illinois, waar hij tijdens een banket zei dat Amerika de problemen die nu spelen zal doorstaan als de Amerikanen denken in de geest van Lincoln.Hij stelde zich tevens een dag uit het leven van Lincoln voor in 1854, voordat zij voorganger president was. ''Waarschijnlijk zat hij met zijn voeten op het bureau. Zijn zonen speelden in zijn buurt, zijn kleren zaten misschien wat strak om zijn ongewone lichaamsbouw, en daar zat hij te denken wie hem misschien zou bellen om hem te vragen of hij minister van Handel mag zijn''. Lachers Met deze anekdote had Obama de lachers op zijn hand. Hij refereerde hiermee aan het nieuws, dat de Republikeinse senator Judd Gregg, die hij op het oog had voor deze functie, zich donderdag terugtrok als kandidaat.Tegen een regionale krant zei Obama later dat de beslissing van Gregg ''een verrassing was, want om de waarheid te vertellen, meneer Gregg benaderde ons met veel interesse en hij leek enthousiast''.Gregg bleek het oneens met Obama's plannen om de Amerikaanse economie nieuw leven in te blazen. De president zei nog steeds vertrouwen te hebben in een regering met Republikeinen en Democraten.
