MojoKid writes "For a CPU that hasn't seen the light of day, there's a great deal of debate surrounding Apple's A6 and the suggestion that it may not appear until later in 2012. The A6 is a complex bit of hardware. Rumors indicate that the chip is a quad-core Cortex-A9 CPU built on 28nm at TSMC and utilizing 3D fabrication technology. While the Cortex-A9 is a proven design, Apple's A6 will be one of the first 28nm chips on the market. The chip will serve as a test case for TSMC's introduction of both 28nm gate-last technology and 3D chip stacking. This is actually TSMC's first effort with an Apple device. The A4 and A5 have both historically been manufactured by Samsung." Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's VP of iPod Product Marketing, tells a bunch of analysts that the first iPhone software update will be coming soon. Analysts then went on to speculate that the update could bring: new widgets, peer-to-peer applications (chat, picture messaging, social networking), location-based services, MMS support, home networking, and possibly some integration with Mac OS X Leopard. Of course, all of that is unconfirmed since it came from analysts, not Apple. These analysts also claimed that both lower priced ($349-$399) and higher priced (something more than $599) iPhone models are coming, differentiated not by features, but on storage. The one thing we do know: the software update is coming soon. [Apple Insider via Wired]

Frankenreview: Ten Takes on the Apple iPhone

Meer: Frankenreview: Ten Takes on the Apple iPhone | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Gizmodo | 2007-07-03 03:26:37
We've heard the iPhone news nonstop for days. We've known it uses slow EDGE for months, and have always suspected that the typing might not feel right. But at the end of the day, a LOT of people are going to pick up this phone, either way. So are they suckers, or the tech elite? Hit the jump to find out the reviewer consensus on Apple's magical iPhone. NYTimes The phone is so sleek and thin, it makes Treos and BlackBerrys look obese. The glass gets smudgy -- a sleeve wipes it clean -- but it doesn't scratch easily. I've walked around with an iPhone in my pocket for two weeks, naked and unprotected (the iPhone, that is, not me), and there's not a mark on it. InformationWeek When you buy other electronics, you have to delay your gratification for hours after opening the box, so you can charge the battery for the first time. Not the iPhone -- it arrives charged and ready to go as soon as you get it out of the box. Newsweek The iPhone has an excellent implement of state-of-the-art features like integrating contacts with the phone function. Plus, the phone allows you to merge up to five conversations into a conference, and a great feature called Visual Voicemail lets you view on screen all the voice messages left for you to play back in the order you choose. CNET ...the touch screen and software interface are easier to use than expected. What's more, we didn't miss a stylus in the least. Despite a lack of tactile feedback on the keypad, we had no trouble tapping our fingers to activate functions and interact with the main menu. PCMag To be fair, the iPhone Internet experience is loads of fun. It's not quite "the Internet in your pocket," however. It displays HTML pages gorgeously (even over EDGE!) but the Internet is now loaded up with Javascript, Java, Flash, streaming media and other plug-ins. The iPhone can't hit many of these rich experiences... Seattle Times Maybe I'm not used to it yet or too old-fashioned, but I dislike the browser. It doesn't have stop or home buttons, so if you tap the wrong link you hit the back arrow and return to the previous page...You can zoom into Web pages nicely, but you're still looking at them on a screen that's a bit smaller than a html">business card. USA Today Phone's saving grace for data is Wi-Fi, if you have access to a hot spot. It automatically determines the fastest network it comes across (Wi-Fi or Edge)...Several times, a confusing "could not activate Edge" message appeared on the screen, though I was in my home office with Wi-Fi. Wall Street Journal The virtual keys are large and get larger as you touch them. Software tries to guess what you're typing, and fix errors. Overall, it works. But the error-correction system didn't seem as clever as the one on the BlackBerry, and you have to switch to a different keyboard view to insert a period or comma, which is annoying...There's also no way to cut, copy, or paste text. PCWorld The 2-megapixel camera, for example, lacks any adjustments and has no zoom. Shutter lag is longer than with a dedicated digital camera--or even the better camera phones I've seen. Gothamist During my weekend playing with the iPhone, I came across a number of questions...(like how to get html">Google Calendar on the device) by the time 2nd generation product roles around. Overall, I'd argue that the iPhone is a culmination of 12 generations of iPods in various forms; to call the iPhone a first generation product is to completely ignore the iPod's history and success... We've been analyzing the iPhone for so long before it was released that our reviews are more studies of our analysis than actual impressions of the experience. The iPhone's legend has grown so large that reviewers don't know how to tackle it, addressing preconceptions more than their own conceptions. And it's for that reason that I think the iPhone is simply a try before you buy purchase. Because at the end of the day, consumers understand the technology much better than the interface or the intentionally obscure feature set, and reviewers are blinking as quickly as possibly to get the stars out of their eyes.

Apple: iPhone eBay and Craigslist Watch: It's a Buyer's Market

Meer: Apple: iPhone eBay and Craigslist Watch: It's a Buyer's Market | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Gizmodo | 2007-07-02 02:23:04
Even though most AT&T stores sold out of iPhones on the first day, many Apple stores still had them in yesterday (as well as today). So why are people putting up iPhones for $700-$900 on Craigslist? And why are auctions on eBay ending at higher than retail? It's hard to say. Looking through completed auctions on eBay, you see lots of phones selling for around $650 with free shipping, which means you're getting a phone for just about retail. There are a few that went for crazier amounts ($700+), but those are pretty rare. So it looks like a buyer's market on eBay. If you live in a state without an Apple store, you can definitely score one here for close to retail. Our guess is that on Craigslist, where you can't see completed listings, has a similar story. Especially here, in San Francisco, where there ought to be tons of Apple stores and tons of stock. Why would someone meet up with a stranger just to get a phone that you can hop down the street and get one from an Apple store? This is of course moot if you have the patience to wait 2-4 weeks to get one from the online Apple store. Those seem to still be in stock as of right now, but ships in 2-4 weeks, which is way too long for most geeks to wait. Apple Store

We're getting indications of the ways the iPhone will be sold (or not sold) and restricted by Apple and AT&T. Reader thefickler writes, "An anonymous AT&T store manager has told blorge.com that users will get their WiFi when they sign a contract locking them into a data plan and EDGE. Kiss your dreams of WiFi reliance goodbye." And our own CmdrTaco found an article up on AppleInsider reporting that the iPhone will not be sold through established business channels — forcing Cingular business customers to stand in line for their goodies, as individuals, at Apple stores. An AT&T Business Division rep told one customer, "There is no ETA on the [ending of the] sale ban to business."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

It seems like Kevin Rose isn't the only person with "insider" knowledge of the iPhone. Morgan Stanley analyst, Rebecca Runkle, has come forth with further details on the infamous phone. (How she got the info is anyone's guess). Unlike Rose, Runkle says the phone will cost $599 for the 4GB model and a whopping $649 for the 8GB version. She also claims it'll be wider than an iPod Nano, but narrower than the 5G iPod. It'll have a nice 3.5-inch display and will come in multi-colored aluminum shells like the Nano. An anonymous reader writes "With the Apple WWDC looming on Monday, the internet once again beats itself silly over what Steve Jobs has in store. At the most fanciful end of the scale, there's talk of the Apple iPhone, to which CNET says, 'keep on dreaming', and Gizmodo says, 'no visible evidence'. The only solid evidence of an iPhone, beyond the endless mocked-up images, is the discovery of hidden phone-related code in a recent iPod updater. Macrumors has some info on what the keynote may contain -- and there's no mention of an iPhone. So, as the rumor mill continues to grind over the weekend, let the predictions begin. Is there an Apple iPhone, or is there not?"
