Word's come down from the People's 'Public of Chizza: The first Chinese-built MG will roll off the line, completely without irony, on new parent company Nanjing's 60th birthday. That date is March 27, 2007, according to Nanjing's deputy chairman Lu Zhenxin. The company's new factory, now under constructon, is reportedly being tooled up with an eye toward turning out 200,000 MG cars and a quarter-million engines per year. The shuttered UK-based MG plant in Longbridge, which will handle some final assembly chores of the decade-old TF, could open exactly two years from the date of its closure (April 8, 2005), while a US plant in Oklahoma could open its doors in 2008.

Former British rivals MG and Rover are facing new competition from China: each other. China's Shanghai Automotive (SAIC), having lost the bidding war for many of MG Rover's assets -- including the MG name -- to Nanjing last year, reportedly spent $21 million to buy the rights to the Rover name from BMW. The deal could still be derailed by Ford, which according to the UK's Guardian, holds rights of first refusal for the brand name after buying Land Rover from BMW in 2000. (And, if SAIC does get Rover, it's banned from building off-road vehicles under the name.) Still, with MG on a high-profile push for expansion, but SAIC having far more financial juice than Nanjing, the fight for bizarro British rule in China is bound to be a hoot, if nothing else.

The Nanjing-Oklahoma Saga sounds could be an epic novel about the railroad building in the old west, and the name of Duke T. Hale fits someone who might be hiding a pickaxe under his ten-gallon hat. Of course, Hale, president and CEO of the newly formed MG Cars North America/Europe, is actually an auto industry veteran who's worked for Ford, Chrysler, Volvo, Mazda, Isuzu and Lotus. In his latest job, he's got the unenviable task of reviving a storied British marque -- known as much for electrical fires as for open-top exhilaration -- which is now owned by a Chinese company, by way of a plan that calls for building cars in Oklahoma. On top of that, he's got a boss who may not understand questions from the press, and thus wind up talking out of school. Edmunds' Michele Krebs recently interviewed Hale about MG's return, the Chinese connection, and what manner of open- or closed-top sportsters might we expect in the US.

Our buddy Yozzie just pulled this hot one off the AP wire:
China's oldest carmaker plans to build an assembly plant in Oklahoma to help revive an English automotive brand -- the M-G.
That's right, the first US-built MG since, er, ever will be under the tutelage of new owner Nanjing Automobile, which plans to create a manufacturing plant and parts-distribution hub in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Oklahoma City will host the company's global sales HQ, with the University of Oklahoma hosting a new R&D facility. The company also plans to restart the Birmingham, UK plant shuttered when MG-Rover disintegrated last year. The company intends to reintroduce MG cars in China and Europe before the first model rolls off the assembly line in Ardmore about two years from now.

While the first MG Camino we posted on a few months ago had the look of a racing support vehicle, this one exudes much more of a town-and-country cruiser vibe. Dig the ingenious spare-tire mounting method. Instead of stowing it behind the passenger seat, as Chevrolet did with our old El Camino, they simply bolted it to the front of the bed. Wood touches abound, as befits a British sports-truckcar. A fine addition to anyone's collection of Morris Garage vehicles, we'd take it to the beach with a picnic lunch and a pretty girl. Maybe a parrot, too. Actually, ixnay on the arrot-pay. One bird and an MG Camino is enough for us. [Thanks to Doug for the tip.]

WEERT - Door een grote brand in een kippenloods aan de Bocholterweg in Weert zijn maandagavond 15.000 kippen om het leven gekomen. Dat liet de brandweer weten. Brand kippenloods slideshow De brand in het pluimveebedrijf vlakbij de Belgische grens brak rond zeven uur uit.Een loods brandde helemaal uit, twee andere kippenloodsen met elk 15.000 kippen konden gered worden. De oorzaak van de brand is onbekend.

20 mijnwerkers omgekomen door gasexplosie in China
Bij een gasexplosie in een kolenmijn in de Chinese provincie Yunnan zijn zeker twintig mijnwerkers omgekomen. Ook zijn nog 23 medewerkers vermist. Dit heeft het Chinese staatspersbureau Xinhua vandaag gemeld. Vermoedelijk waren rond de veertig kompels ondergronds aan het werk toen de explosie zich voordeed. Het ongeluk bij de stad Qujing is veroorzaakt door een 'plotselinge, gewelddadige uitbarsting van kolen, gas en stenen', zo zei een medewerker van de mijn. Dertig brandweerlieden, honderd reddingswerkers en driehonderd man medisch personeel is ter plekke, meldde Xinhua. De redding van de 23 die nog in de mijn vastzitten wordt bemoeilijkt door een gaslek. Door de hoge concentraties gas kan er een explosie plaatsvinden.De Chinese kolenmijnen zijn de dodelijkste ter wereld. Hoewel de autoriteiten de laatste jaren maatregelen hebben getroffen en onder meer veel illegale mijnen hebben gesloten, vallen er jaarlijks nog honderden doden in de mijnen. Er doen zich nog altijd veel ongelukken, explosies en overstromingen voor.Volgens officiële cijfers zijn vorig jaar 2433 mensen om het leven gekomen door incidenten in Chinese kolenmijnen, wat neerkomt op gemiddeld zeker 6 personen per dag.

26 kinderen omgekomen bij busongeluk
ISLAMABAD - Bij een busongeluk in Pakistan zijn maandag ten minste 26 kinderen om het leven gekomen. Foto: AFP Dat heeft de Pakistaanse politie bekendgemaakt. Ook twee volwassen verloren het leven bij het ongeluk. Er vielen veertig gewonden.De bus was op weg terug van een schoolreisje naar een zoutmijn. Het voertuig stortte bij Kalar Kahar, ongeveer 160 kilometer ten oosten van de hoofdstad Islamabad, in een greppel. In Pakistan vinden veel dodelijke verkeersongevallen plaats. De oorzaken zijn slechte wegen, matig onderhouden voertuigen en roekeloos rijgedrag. In juni kwamen zeven kinderen om toen de bus waarin ze zaten in een kanaal stortte.
