Ford, GM, and Mazda have announced that they are going to add iPod support in most of their 2007 models joining auto manufacturers Acura, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Honda, Nissan, and Volkswagen thus increasing the estimated availability to 70 percent of the new 2007 model vehicles sold in the United States. Said Doug VanDagens, director of Ford's product and business development for electronics group, "Consumers are listening to music, they're messaging each other, and they want to engage in all those activities in their vehicles but in a safe manner.".This is a big deal for Apple, the maker of the iPod, who already have a 75 percent market share in the U.S. in the media player business. Having iPod support in 70 percent of cars to be sold in 2007 is a great selling point. Apple says they have sold 58 million units since the iPod first appeared in 2001. J-spec-o-philes take note: Mazda's Verisa tall hatch has gotten a facelift for 2007. The Verisa -- if you'd never heard of it before possibly seeing this one -- is the upmarket version of the Demio, also known as the Mazda2 -- a model that's been mentioned as a possible competitor to the Nissan Versa, Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit in the states (with a Ford-badged counterpart) if the subcompact market takes off. The Verisa -- which is more spec'd out than the Demio -- sells in the neighborhood of $14,000-$16,000 in Japan. For you? think $12,000+ but without the swank interior or fakie chrome bits.

Screw Sirius and screw XM cause iPod's gone and killed the satellite star. Instead, the new hotness in radio accoutrements will be iPod integration. Apple released word today it's teamed up with FoMoCo, the General and Ford's division of Zoom-Zoom, Mazda, to deliver "seamless iPod integration" across the majority of their respective car brands and models. Sounds like a plan to us. We were early adopters of the fruity handheld music player, so this is something we've been looking forward to something like this for a while now. Paging Dr. Z -- when's the German-American hybrid of DaimlerChrysler......jumping on this here bandwagon? Oh wait...they've got MyGig...and...yeah. What about Toyota and Honda? No clue.
As for availability -- it'll vary. GM will offer iPod connections on all 56 of its models, the General said it would offer the "personal audio link" at dealerships for less than $160 plus installation as early as October for the Chevy HHR, and the other 56 models when they get around to it. FoMoCo's system'll be called "TripTunes Advanced" and as is befitting its "Way Forward" plan, provided little detail on price or timeframes other than to say the system will be added early next year to certain unnamed '07 models.

Apple has inked a deal with three major car manufacturers today to make it a bit easier to connect the iPod into car stereos. Apple has come to agreement with Ford, GM and Mazda to see that 70-percent of their 2007 model vehicles will offer some way of connecting iPods directly. The iPod integration seems to be as simple as a dock connection in the glove compartment. iPod control and navigation will be done through the already existing stereo controls. GM has already announced pricing regarding this issue. As early as October they will offer the iPod audio connection for $160 plus labor. I'll stick with my cheapy FM transmitter and 12V DC charger thank you very much. – Travis Hudson

Mazda took the wraps off the MX-5 Roadster Coupe earlier today at the 2006 British Motor Show. Using technology first developed for the origami industry, the company's engineers figured out a way to fit the roof -- which Mazda says is the fastest in production (12 seconds from top to not) -- into the same space as the softtop model's cloth top. Doing so, they've preserved trunk space, but added 66 pounds (the weight kind) to the package -- which required additional suspension tuning to offset. The production model will be in dealerships by Spring '07.

Sorry, we mean graphic novel series. Mazda is parterning with Top Cow Comics on a new series of colorful books that use more pictures than words to tell a story (what are they called again?). The series, dubbed "Revved" -- a marketing vehicle dreamed up by LA's Spacedog agency -- features a Mazda RX-8 in its plotline. The first part of the series can be viewed (and read) online, though the books will premiere at this year's Comic-Con International convention. Word is, a related TV series from Fox Television Studios is in the works. Talk about product placement and media synergies -- this is more like media-product nuclear fission.

The fervor with which Brits protect the commons gives us a warm feeling in our various bits, but we get ornery when they cut too close to our purview. For instance, a UK watchdog group is upholding a complaint against a Mazda print ad for what they feel is a reckless usage of blurring effects and text promoting dangerous driving. We'll let the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) explain themselves:The ASA considered that the claims "PLEASE REMOVE ALL LOOSE CHANGE", "Hold on tight", "added exhilaration" and "NOW THAT'S ZOOM-ZOOM", together with the image of a moving car against a blurred background, made speed the predominant message of the ad. We concluded that the ad was irresponsible and encouraged fast, aggressive driving and asked Mazda to amend it. We asked them to seek help from the CAP Copy Advice team when devising similar campaigns. The ad breached CAP Code clauses 2.2 (Social responsibility), 10.1 (Safety), 48.1, 48.2 and 48.3 (Motoring).(CAP Copy Advice team? Mr. Orwell, call the front desk.) Mazda pointed out the ad was meant to convey a sensation similar to that a driver would experience in a roadster designed to be fun to drive, but was slapped down by the schoolmarms that be. And we thought dealing with the insurance lobby was tough.

No word yet on the weight liability.

Check this out. The original Mazda RX7's air conditioning unit seriously sapped power. Remember, this little Japanese sports car had a Wankel rotary engine up front, a handbag-sized three-piece Wearing Blender that stumped-up just 135 hp (or, with the chiller engaged, less). That meant, if you happened to encounter a late '70's Yank tank spoiling for a fight, you'd reach-up and press the little button that turned the AC off. The RX7 bucked slightly, as the engine regained lost vigor. You kinda felt like Mad Max, spooling-up his supercharger on the last of the great V8 Interceptors, only you know, in reverse.
The '78 RX7 was certainly a welcome weapon for cash-strapped, sports car-starved Americans. And it came from an unexpected source. The Mazda RX2 and RX3 were odd-looking ducks whose Wankels were only slightly more reliable than Ethiopian train service. Mazda's twin-rotor RX4 was largely de-goofy-fied and mechanically sound - and arrived just in time for the Arab oil embargo. (A properly-flogged RX4's thirst was prodigious.) And then Mazda engineer Akio Uchiyama and Mazda Board member Sinpei Hanaoka came to the same conclusion: rotary engined sports car. Project X605 was born.
The car's defining accomplishment was, of course, its engine. Sure, the RX7's taut, unadorned sheetmetal put the brand back into the game, but the itsy-bitsy Wankel made that wikkid hood line possible. The powerplant's compact dimensions, along with a single piece monocoque bodyshell, helped create one of the lightest, best-balanced sports cars extant. Air slicing aerodynamics and a well-sorted Euro-style suspension -- McPherson struts and coil springs (front) and live axle with Watt's linkage (rear) -- kept the RX7 stable at speed. There were even disc brakes up front. And it didn't cost a lot of money: $6395 without mud guards or undercoating.
On the road, well, today's Ferrari and VTEC drivers know the joys of caning a smooth-spinning, high-revving powerplant. The RX7 was the grand daddy of them all. As you might expect from an 1146cc mill, low-end torque was notable by its absence. But once you crested 3500rpm, the mainsails unfurled and it was brisk sailing all the way to the 7000rpm redline. In scientific terms, the RX7 was no match for a muscle car. Series One cars sprinted from zero to sixty in a shade under nine seconds. But the RX7 was one of those admirable machines that could carry any and all speed generated with complete self-assurance. You could eventually catch and outmaneuver just about anything on the road.
Saying that, the steering was a big chink in the RX7's dynamic armor; the recirculating ball helm felt dead at the straight ahead and more numb than a vodka-soaked WASP through long sweepers. Like the previous-gen BMW M5, the RX7 was only a rack and a pinion away from greatness. Well, that and a bit of shove. For the next generation RX7 ('81), Mazda installed a more powerful 13B rotary and fitted discs at all four corners. It wasn't enough. Porsche, Datsun, Chevrolet and even Ford came-up with new and better answers. Mazda kept after it, bolting on a turbo and offering a convertible. And then they built a no-holds-barred twin-turbo third-gen RX7, a car that could well be the hardest riding -- and one of the most capable-- sports cars on planet earth. And then they built the quirky RX8.
Somewhere along the line, Mazda lost the purity of the original RX7 -- so much so that the company had to build the Elan-a-like MX5 to recapture it. It's a shame. The three-piece rotary engine is a magnificent design that deserves a better home than the current RX8. I'm sure there are plenty of good reasons why Wankel's baby is a virtual orphan, but I wonder what Mazda's engineers could do with the latest rotary technology, a clean sheet of paper and a bunch of pistonheads riding shotgun.
