"Off duty" Nissan engineers, in a secret meth lab at the Nissan Technical Centre Europe, raided the NISMO parts bin and came up with the 350 GT-S concept, a supercharged version of the production coupe. Nissan's boosted horsepower to around 374 hp (380 metric), and added a re-tuned suspension and Strosek aero package -- all from aftermarket kit. The exhaust note was tuned by way of an electronically controlled bypass valve. The company calls it a "work in progress," but rumors have it the GT-S hearkens a special edition for production. It'll be unveiled the UK's Goodwood Festival of Speed next week.

Automotive News is reporting GM's chief side-thorn Kirk Kerkorian -- who controls 9.9% of the company's stock -- is pushing a deal that would allow Renault-Nissan to buy a minority interest in General Motors. But that's not the end of it. In a letter Kerkorian wrote to Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn and Renault Chairman Louis Schweitzer, he said he wants to explore a "three-company, partnership-based alliance." In other news, every M&A lawyer in the world just climaxed. [Thanks to Jeffrey for the tip.] [UPDATE: No comment from Renault.]

General Motors issued a "oh no you di'int" to this morning's media feeding frenzy regarding ot the recent 13-D filing that indicated Renault-Nissan's intention to buy an interest in GM: General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) has received no offer or proposal from Renault/Nissan with respect to its participating in the Renault/Nissan Alliance, as suggested in the 13-D Filing made today by the Tracinda Corporation. The Tracinda request will be taken under advisement by the GM Board of Directors. At this time, we have no further comment.Just checking -- "taken under advisement" still means "go fuck yourself," right?

Tho' we're no fan of showtunes, we think that's how Andrew Lloyd woulda written it if the bible story had been about Carlos Ghosn -- the CEO of the only major Japanese automaker not to show sales growth in the month of May. Nissan, Japan's second-largest automaker posted a decline in global production of 11%, selling only 248,349 cars -- and making the company's fifth straight month of declining sales. All this while Toyota, Honda and Mazda all showed positive sales growth. Can this be the end of the fabled story of Mr. Ghosn and his amazingly fabulous techni-color Dream-car? Only time and a story-teller know for sure. Go-go-go, GO!

We have to say, that whenever we think of Nissan compacts, the old "New Nissan Sentra! You need this car!" jingle pops into our head. What was is about the unbridled optimisim of the early 1980s brought that kind of stuff about, complete with choral vocal groups singing faux-Andrew-Lloyd-Webber-style anthemic catchphrase tunes? Who ever thought that was a good idea? They should've commissioned Mike Post to write all their music. We suppose that's what life under threat of nuclear annihilation will do to you. Meanwhile, Nissan's up and undercut Honda's Fit with its Versa pricing, launching the base model at $12,450. Which is just one more reason not to buy an Aveo. [Thanks to Brian for the tip.]

Moving day always gives us the feeblies. And we're not even the ones uprooting our families and hauling 'em hook, line and sonar-guided bassfinder to Opryland (not to be confused with Oprahland -- also known as Wacker Drive). A reader sent in these shots of moving vans being loaded at Nissan's Torrance-Gardena offices in California. They'll soon be bound for the company's new corporate home in Nashville, Tennessee. It's like a very special episode of "Wife Swap" featuring around 1,000 automotive engineers, execs and their various broods. Let's hope someone had the good sense to hire a camera crew and that guy from "Hell's Kitchen" for "Brit chic."

'Nissan wil Datsun nieuw leven inblazen'
De Japanse autofabrikant Nissan wil het legendarische automerk Datsun nieuw leven inblazen. Dat meldt de Japanse zakenkrant Nikkei. De eerste Datsuns werden in 1932 in Japan op de markt gebracht. Het merk werd enkele decennia later succesvol geïntroduceerd in de Amerikaanse showrooms en kreeg ook in Europa voet aan de grond. Na 1981 werd Datsun van de markt gehaald en bracht Nissan nieuwe modellen alleen nog uit onder eigen naam.Volgens Nikkei wil Nissan vanaf 2014 weer nieuwe Datsuns gaan produceren. Het zou daarbij gaan om goedkope modellen, bedoeld voor opkomende markten. De autofabrikant uit Yokohama liet vandaag in een reactie weten geen commentaar te geven op het bericht.

'Nissan wil delen NedCar overnemen'
vk UPDATE De Japanse autofabrikant Nissan is van plan delen van het noodlijdende NedCar over te nemen. Nissan denkt dat de fabriek uitermate geschikt is om onderdelen voor hun auto's te maken. De Japanners willen niet de hele fabriek overnemen; het bedrijf zoekt vooral extra capaciteit, zei de directeur Europa aftersales tegenover de NOS. Eerder op de dag ging het gerucht de ronde dat het Zwitserse bedrijf Q-PM NedCar zou willen overnemen van Mitsubishi, na berichtgeving in Het Financieele Dagblad. FNV Bondgenoten zei een mail hierover ontvangen te hebben van Q-PM.De berichten zijn vooralsnog echter niet bevestigd. Q-PM lijkt niet eens te bestaan. Op het adres in Zwitserland waar het zou zijn gevestigd, staat alleen een advocatenkantoor ingeschreven.Het Japanse Mitsubishi liet weten dat het niets weet over de verkoop van NedCar aan het Zwitserse bedrijf. 'Wij weten hier helemaal niets van. We proberen nog steeds een oplossing te vinden voor de periode na 2013', aldus een woordvoerder van Mitsubishi. Q-PM zou 700 miljoen euro willen investeren in NedCar en daar beginnen met de productie van wankelmotoren. De huidige 1500 werknemers zouden hun baan kunnen behouden.
