It wasn't ever designed to be more than a disposable people hauler, and the 1959 Oldsmobile is rarely included in a conversation of the most attractive designs the late 50s had to offer. Even so, to us it's hard to imagine anyone would argue that this 1959 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Fiesta station wagon, wearing the same shade of "Russet Poly" paint it left the factory with, is anything but beautiful. Oldsmobile lost market share in 1957 because it's design was considered to be dated in comparison with the new "Forwardlook" Chryslers, specifically Desoto (the company's direct competition). 54 years later, one look at this weathered Olds is enough for most car lovers to understand why GM's "dated" styling from 1957 is still so popular.

Murliee Martin had to leave early to go pick up a guitar player down at the crossroads, so he asked me to step in and fill his evil shoes. And it's quite apropos as a certain friend of Jalopnik just referred to me as, "That dark spirit Jonny Lieberman." So be it. Yesterday's PCH was positively demonic with the Citroen SM beating out the XK-E 2+2. Good luck with that. In breaking with that theme, we bring you these two classics from Boise, ID. Why Boise? A friend of mine went to college there and found herself hanging out with the Satan worshippers because they had better weed than the Mormons. Go figure. And now, with Anton LaVey as my witness, I bring you the cars!First to act is a 1952 second series Chrysler Saratoga, the most inexpensive V8 machine they made. This cheapness is reflected 55-years later in the seller's asking price: a steal at only $600. Interestingly, in 1951 Chrysler offered the Saratoga with an optional HEMI motivator. Does today's candidate possess such an engine? Who knows, as there is no engine! Or transmission. But it does come with "spare parts," so there you have it. We'd wager you could pick up a junked Magnum/Charger for not much scratch and swap it right in. Well, maybe not right in, but you get the idea. And the baby blue has got to go. You must have a few cans of gray spray paint lying around somewhere. We only ask that you leave the top white. As the seller says, this baby is a "great project car," so long as you have all your weekends free for eternity, in Hell!
Oh, but look at this guy. Who doesn't get their dark heart strings pulled by a '41 Olds Coupe? The owner just painted it (black, of course) and the interior is in "great shape." Sure, it costs 5 times as much as the Saratoga, but two doors are always more desirable, right? Plus, for that kind of scratch you at least get an engine and a tranny to wrench away forever on. Oh, wait a moment -- you don't! That's right, just like the Chrysler, this sucker is a body on a frame with the promise of an eternity of bloodied knuckles and that's about it. And it only costs $2400 more. Still, the Olds is a looker, and few cars have said "drop a small block in me" with quite as much urgency. As always, the Devil's in the details, or with these two the lack there of. Cue Slayer, praise Satan, we're out.

If we had $275,000 to spend on a vehicle, we probably wouldn't purchase this here French classic. Johnson would no doubt get a 1972 El Camino so tricked out that the blower scoop would completely obscure the view over the hood. Bumbeck would spend the cash converting a 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado to rear-wheel drive. Wert would get his Jeep Liberty dipped in gold and I would buy something very, very British and immobile. No, we're degenerate blogger slobs and the height of the Jazz-age class this Delage has to offer is almost totally lost on us. Still, she is gorgeous and any car manufactured right on Avenue des Champs Elysees has a reserved parking spot in our dream garage in the sky. Oddly, we have no clue what Spinelli would buy. The new European Ford Mondeo may be the most well-designed mainstream midsize wagon ever produced (at least since the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser). Damnation by the faintest of praise? Maybe. But Ford's European boys deserve their propers for creating a compelling form from the most banal parameters. There's talk one of Ford's Euro cars will be ported for US use. While we all want the Focus ST (judging from this poll), we might settle for the Mondeo Wagon if it comes with AWD and a Cosworth-tuned six. Priorities. – Mike Spinelli

Sweet Peet's got a new rant up this week, and in all the hoopla of the LA Auto Show, it's a shame it took us until now to notice it -- especially because instead of a rant, it's a positively exuberant love fest for GM's blue-haired brand, Buick. Now I know China is Buick's big market, and the Enclave's some hot stuff -- it's certainly a design iteration or two better looking than the Rendezvous (and I'm through with you) and other vehicular nonsense the General's tossed out to represent its "We're Not Oldsmobile" brand during the past few years. (At least since the Turbo Buicks of the 80's.) But you won't see us running a GM PR shot of Tiger "Enclave-Engorged" Woods, "Slick" Rick Wagoner and Buick general manager Steve "Don't Call Me" Shannon with Buick PR man Dave Darovitz's spin-tastic caption underneath it as Sweet Peet does at the bottom of his weekly rant. Yes, there were Catalina Safaris, Vista Cruisers and Sport Suburbans, but when anyone thinks of the classic American station wagon, thoughts drift to the Ford Country Squire. Less-remembered, however, is its less-deluxe brother, which didn't feature the stylish faux-wood so popular in the day. While the Squire is desirable as a reminder of '60s/'70s kitsch, the Sedan was actually a pretty great-looking car. Pictured here is a '68 example, and while the '62 Catalina Safari remains, in our mind, the ne plus ultra of vintage wagons, the Country Sedan was a well-balanced machine. With solid, clean lines and muscle-invoking 390 badges, the rad multi-opening rear door/tailgate, the subtle red striping in the grille, and those cool-looking, but subtle vents in the rear pillar, the '68 Country Sedan was simply one of the finest-looking station wagons ever built. Our parents traded theirs for an '80 Mercury Colony Park, the Country Squire's upmarket fraternal twin, and in retrospect, they would've been better off dumping the four grand they spent on the Merc into the trusty old Ford. We still miss that car, with its prismatic "Fisherman's Wharf" and "Scotland" stickers in the driver's side rear window, applied by our father and us over the protestations of our mother. They evoked the dream of wide-open station-wagon travels, even if the car was only ever driven around Sacramento. If we had it today, it'd have a lot more of those stickers on it.

We're not sure if this was the pinnacle of GM innovation, the depths of laziness or the height of cool. More than likely, it's all three wrapped up into one liitle deep and tall invention...on the pinnacle of brilliance. Yes, it helped to make the Custom Cruiser weigh north of 5,000 lbs, but it's a small price to pay for sexy. In fact, we now want made standard on all wagons. Sales are up, sales are down -- we've seen so many damn press releases over the past hour we can't keep things straight. When we first saw GM's press release (which you too can have your mind blown by after the jump) it took us a couple of read-throughs to find out why it wasn't making sense to our fragile little minds. Then we realized GM dropped the comparison 2005 numbers into paragraph ten of the press release. See for yourself -- and remember, don't believe anything you read -- until you've read it at least 12 times and your brain turns to mush. Oh, right -- the numbers -- GM's down 25.9% from May of last year (0,473 vehicles sold to 558,092 vehicles) -- with total car sales down 2.3% and truck sales down an astronomic 36.8%.
Mark LaNeve, ever the optimist, had this to say:
"By any measure . quality of share, launch performance, mix and revenue . June was a very solid month for GM. Comparing our total volume with last year's employee discount-driven phenomenon is like comparing a home run to a grand slam. Either way, you are scoring runs."
Right -- unless your key metric is sales. Then, to continue the baseball analogy, you're getting your ass kicked by the other team's mascot. Click the jump for the press release.

Highest Monthly Sales Of 2006: GM Delivers 413,473 Vehicles
Sales up 15.2 Percent Compared To May
Launch Vehicles Continue Momentum
Highest Market Share of 2006 Anticipated
DETROIT - General Motors' dealers in the United States sold 413,473 new cars and trucks in June, the company's best sales performance year-to-date, up 15.2 percent, or about 68,000 units, compared with May.
"I am proud of our June sales results, especially since they reflect our highest sales month so far this year," said Mark LaNeve, General Motors North America vice president, Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "Our launch vehicles had their best sales results so far this year, as evidenced by the sales gains of our all-new full-size utilities. We also had strong sales of the Chevrolet Impala (0,716 vehicles), HHR (0,503), Buick Lucerne (0,690), Pontiac G6 (0,074) and Torrent (0,789)."
GM posted strong passenger car sales with Pontiac leading the way, up 28.7 percent over May and up 12.1 percent over June 2005 on the strength of G6 and G6 convertible hardtop sales. G6 set an all-time sales record and is up 39.9 percent for the first six months of the year. Solstice continues to be one of the hottest cars in the country, and the Torrent crossover also achieved an all-time sales record, up 35.8 percent over May. Other GM divisions posted solid results with Saturn sales up 49.1 percent over May levels. Chevrolet small cars posted robust sales with Cobalt up 21.9 percent, and Aveo up 23.5 percent, compared with May. Also, Impala sales were up 24.6 percent over May.
On the truck side of the market, GM sold 33,148 2007 full-size utilities (including Luxury) in June. Total sales of all GM launch vehicles were up 21.8 percent compared with May and accounted for 25.5 percent of GM's total deliveries for the month. The success of GM's launch vehicles is one of the key components of GM's North America turnaround plan.
"Our customers have told us that success in the marketplace depends on a combination of great new products, strong brands and segment-leading fuel economy, and that is exactly the turnaround strategy we are executing," LaNeve said.
Chevrolet HHR, Equinox, Saturn Vue and Pontiac Torrent pushed total small utility sales up 25.3 percent compared with a year ago. HHR had its best retail sales month since launch setting an all-time sales record for June and CYTD.
GM sports cars also posted solid June sales results, with a 60.1 percent improvement compared with year-ago levels. Corvette sales were up 21.6 percent and Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky continue their brisk sales, with Solstice remaining on dealers' lots an average of 13 days and Sky remaining on lots 10 days.
GM's luxury utilities posted strong sales in June, with the all-new 2007 Cadillac Escalade selling 2,604 units; 2007 Escalade ESV selling 1,782 units; and Cadillac SRX sales increasing 31.6 percent compared with one year ago with 2,489 units sold.
GM will continue to introduce an array of new vehicles throughout 2006, including the Saturn AURA, all-new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups, the fuel-efficient Saturn Vue Green Line Hybrid, and GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook crossovers.
June 2005 was the strongest sales month in 19 years with 558,092 deliveries. Compared with last year, June 2006 sales were down 25.9 percent with total car sales down 2.3 percent, and truck sales down 36.8 percent.
"By any measure . quality of share, launch performance, mix and revenue . June was a very solid month for GM. Comparing our total volume with last year's employee discount-driven phenomenon is like comparing a home run to a grand slam. Either way, you are scoring runs," said LaNeve.
Certified Used Vehicles
June sales for all certified GM brands, including GM Certified Used Vehicles, Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, Used Cars from Saturn, Saab Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles and HUMMER Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, were 43,352 units, equivalent to results last June. Total year-to-date certified GM sales are 263,597 units, up 1.5 percent from the same period last year.
GM Certified Used Vehicles, the industry's top-selling certified pre-owned brand, posted 37,155 sales in June, up 4 percent from June 2005. Year-to-date sales for GM Certified Used Vehicles are 228,678 units, up 4 percent.
GM Certified Used Vehicles, which sells Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, GMC and Oldsmobile models, reached a major milestone in June with the sale of its 2 millionth unit. GM Certified, the first manufacturer-certified brand to cross the 2 million sales threshold, set new category records for certified sales each of the last four years, and Chevrolet has been the industry's top-selling single-line make certified used vehicle since 2004. More than 1 million GM Certified units have been sold since 2004 and GM Certified is on track to set another annual sales record for the category this year.
Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles posted 3,618 sales in June, up 6 percent from last June. Used Cars from Saturn sold 1,631 units, down 51 percent. Saab Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 857 units, down 10 percent. In its sixth month of operation, HUMMER Certified Pre-Owned sold 91 units.
"June was another strong month for GM Certified Used Vehicles, the industry's top-selling certified pre-owned brand, with sales up 4 percent over last June and up more than 4 percent year-to-date over the same period last year," LaNeve said. "This month GM Certified Used Vehicles became the industry's first manufacturer-certified brand to reach 2 million sales and is key to our strategy to give customers terrific value on both new and certified used vehicles."

We were a little suprised that this latest eBaycamino was found in Texas. Righteously, it does feature a "Texas Truck" license plate, which for a number of reasons we won't enumerate, is one of our favorite plates ever. But Texas is a state of Chevrolets and Cadillacs with no middle ground. At least in our romanticized view. In reality, it's also full of a lot of claptrap Oldsmobiles and pseudo-vintage Japanese tin that simply will not die. So a '77 Pontiac truckcar is a bit of an aberration. an anamoly. And it reminds us of our old '75 ElCo, which we're missing terribly at the moment. [Thanks to Daniel for the tip.]
