Back in the era when big, crude Detroit muscle ruled the streets of Alameda, there were two types of cars that did most of the burnouts in front of the AM/PM on Friday nights. Two types of cars that rattled the windows of quiet neighborhoods with their Cherry Bombs and gear drives. I speak, of course, of the GM A-Body and the Chrysler B-Body. We saw an excellent example of the former in yesterday's DOTS, and today we're going to take a look at its main rival. This car actually lives just a few blocks from the Chevelle, so it's likely that the owners know each other.
Now that's just plain scary. Like a piano-wire murderer with half the skin on his face sliced off and big patches of skull visible. Not only that, the weight reduction must be on the order of 200 pounds, and it's exactly where you most want to take the weight off a rear-drive car. Still, the bumper/grille setup on these cars looked so good that I hope the owner's looking for all the parts.
Just like the Chevelle, there's no telling what engine this thing has. You could get the B-body with anything from a 225-inch Slant Six all the way up to a 425-horse 426 Hemi in '71. I'm guessing this car is on its fifth engine, which I hope is a 440 with 750 double-pumper and rusty Hedmans. Of course, it might be a smog 318.
Plymouth had a cool-looking emblem. Too bad they're kaput now.
Spray-painting black Rustoleum on every spot with body rust definitely gives this car a nice menacing look.
Best of all, it has the biggest wheels and tires that can possibly be stuffed into the wheelwells. Very Mad Max.
galleryPost('DOTS_71Satellite', 11, '1971 Satellite Down on the Street');
So now it's time for our poll. Let's say the Collapse of Civilization has taken place, and Alameda's version of Lord Humungus rules the island city, scavenging for plunder with his army of followers and so on. Which of the two most recent DOTS cars would best suit the ruling strongman?

Sporting front-wheel drive and a sort of over-under transmission, we remember the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Champs as cars that defied their diminutive size with a measure of both performance and economy. A throw lever next to the standard shifter offered additional motoring flexibility by way of hi-low ratio for each gear, effectively turning the four-speed into an eight-speed. Push the lever forward? Power! Pulling it back returned economy. Dodge Colts and Plymouth Champs of this era were in reality cleverly rebadged Mitsubishi Colts, which were sold as Mirages in Japan. This particular Champ seems to have survived remarkably well given it has evidently super shifted all of its 45K miles in central New Jersey.

Nearly a half-century before Plymouth became an asterisk on Chrysler Group's balance sheet, the company created a one-off concept signifying the early years of the space race. The Plymouth Tornado, built on the bones of a 1958 Fury, was a design perfectly suited to its time -- despite having the face of a clown fish -- but was likely outdated within its first six months of life. Recently the subject of a $150,000 restoration job ($22,000 for the push-button tranny alone), the Toronado's being auctioned by Red Baron's. Hopefully the collectors market will support such an indulgence, or the car's owner has another shirt, because he's probably going to lose the one he's got on. – Mike Spinelli

If you had to pick the absolute peak of Chrysler's erstwhile Plymouth brand, you'd be hard pressed not to peg it at 1968-1969. Once content courting suburban dads with promises of economy and practicality, Plymouth emerged at the cutting edge of youth car culture -- without sacrificing its core audience. A $50,000 check to Warner Brothers meant the company could associate its Road Runner car with the Road Runner cartoon character -- a favorite of Cocoa Puffs junkies and crank-shooting speed freaks alike -- at once recasting the staid coupe as a viable alternative to the Pontiac GTO. What a difference 38 years makes. – Mike Spinelli

One of the cooler finds out on the not-so-mean streets of Metro Detroit this weekend has to be this 1963 Plymouth Belvedere with a 6.6 liter 400, done-up for the boys in blue looking for the brothers Blues. The car with the same name as the butler, was re-built by John Hammond, a deputy sherriff in Tennessee, as a tribute to the Blues Brothers and the Mount Prospect Illinois Police Department. John ended up selling his beloved "Elwood" to finance some of his other fine projects, which is one of the reasons why it's now up here in Michigan with a new owner and available for us to yell "Illinois Nazis!" at the top of our lungs. And as Wert says, the best part's the license plate -- "STOLEN1."

Yesterday, when we covered the introduction of the Dodge Challenger at Daytona, we noted that Mike Joy failed to mention Plymouth when talking about the Superbird, and then referred to it as the Superbird Daytona. No doubt, Joy knows his NASCAR, but he also sent us a message today politely taking umbrage at our inference that the Plymouth brand was specifically omitted from the introduction. His message and our response after the jump.
I enjoyed your review of the Challenger announcement in Daytona, but I'd appreciate a small correction regarding my (mostly unscripted) remarks.
I tried to be careful to say Superbird AND Daytona, and not combine them as one model. I'd greatly appreciate your making that small edit, thanks.
PR chose to group all the historic cars under the banner of "Chrysler Group brands". As for Plymouth, if you looked closely around the parking lot display, there was a Charger, and lots of E-bodies.... all Challengers... no 'Cudas, no Road Runners, no Satellites, no GTX's, etc.
Point being, there was no specific intent to omit Plymouth, or to diminish the contributions of the Plymouth Superbird. Instead, the Chrysler Group folks chose to concentrate on the brands that are in the showroom today.
I'm one of the biggest fans of the Chrysler TransAm effort of 1970. Dan Gurney, Sam Posey are friends of mine, and I was at many of those races. The AAR Cuda and Challenger TA remain two of my favorite cars to this day. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
Thanks,
Mike Joy
FOX Sports
Of course, Mike; you've been around racing for years and have probably forgotten more than we'll ever know, and the Mopar wing cars are some of the most famous racing machines ever built. But while you say that there was no specific intent to omit Plymouth, we're still wondering a bit. As for the "Superbird Daytona" comments, we just re-watched the press conference, and you do refer to the Charger Daytona and then the Superbird (sans Plymouth) after specifically mentioning the Chrysler 300 running at Daytona, but you then refer to the Superbird as the "Daytona Superbird," which we can accept considering it was built for superspeedways, but you then refer to it as the "Superbird Daytona," which frankly leaves us a little suspicious of Chrysler PR's motives. Then again, we sorta understand it; nobody wants the failure of an entire brand mentioned when introducing a new model. Thanks for writing, Mike. And keep reading.
[UPDATE: We received this e-mail from Joy just as the post was winding its way through our labyrinthine system of shaky servers:
Thanks Davey... I'll have to correct my correction, then. After writing you, I reviewed the info supplied to me by Chrysler... I dont mind sharing it with you verbatim...
"Welcome to Daytona, the scene of many historic Chrysler Group victories... won in classic cars and plioted by legendary drivers: Chrysler 300, by Lee Petty Dodge Daytonas / Plymouth Superbirds piloted by Buddy Baker, Bobby Isaac, Richard Petty, etc."
So the Plymouth omission falls squarely on my shoulders, although it was unintentional. Guess I should have left a longer pause between "Superbird" and "Daytona" in my remarks then, so they wouldn't have sounded like one model.
I was quite impressed with Eric Ridenour's current knowledge of the auction market for for Daytona's and E bodies. We had a quite a backstage discussion about it, and the numbers just wowed Tom LaSorda.
Thanks,
Mike]

Maximum Mopar Day marches on like time here on Tha Jalop with the Plymouth Fire Arrow. While the finest example of Arrow-flambé was the Snake's Funny Car, the hottest non-nitromethane powered example of the line was the 2.6L Fire Arrow. Kicking out 83hp and 89 lb. ft. while weighing in at just over a ton, the Fire Arrow was truly a force to be reckoned with on the streets and avenues of turn-of-the-Seventies America, but we'd probably rather have a '69 Charger from which we could fire dynamite arrows.
