An anonymous reader writes "CNET UK has written a head-to-head piece entitled Apple Newton vs Apple iPhone. Despite the Newton being released some 10 years ago, and despite the iPhone being a phone, not a tablet, the site's editors believe the Newton is the more innovative of the two Apple products. The two devices were tied over four rounds, but in the 'Special Powers' element, where the iPhone was praised for its iPod capability, the Newton countered with its ability to play MP3s, connect to iTunes and 'its ability to work as a phone' because 'Blam! Not even the iPhone can do that.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Meer: Apple's iPhone is not a "smartphone" - Part 2 | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Software Headlines :: Index | 2007-03-19 15:11:33
Sure, its a technicality, but a few more analysts have called out mobile media reporters for calling the iPhone a smartphone. ABI Research Director Stuart Carlaw and Principal Mobile Broadband Analyst Philip Solis base their assertion using the definition of a smartphone as a cellular handset using an open, commercial operating system that supports third party applications.The iPhone will run Applesoftware and OSX but will not run licensed third party applications (unlicensed, bootleg hacks, however, are another matter). The dont deny that the iPhone promises to be a high-end phone with a lot of great features but by closing it off from a third-party ecosystem with companies competing to sell similar apps.Of course, look how long it took the iPod to go from an iTunes, Mac-only setup to work with home brew and non-Apple non-Mac apps (I recall one nobly named XPlay) to, ultimately, compatibility with several free and multi-OS programs. (In case you werent looking, less than a year). To stay commercially viable to many more millions of non-Mac users, Im guessing Apple will need to open up the iPhone to allow a few select companies to develop compatible programs and maybe even run some Java and Brew apps. Oh, and to make customers happy and make non-Mac owners happy.Remember, this is Apples first phone and see how many original, unrepaired or unhacked iPods are still operational? Clandestine info about Apple's upcoming iPhone (see fake pic at right) keeps trickling in, and the latest assertion has Apple and Cingular teaming up to distribute the phone at first, with Cingular snagging exclusive rights to Apple's iPhone for its initial six months on the market. After that, other providers will also be join the fun.
As the story goes, the candy bar phone with a 2.2-inch display, iTunes and 3-megapixel camera is still on track for an early 2007 release. Those in the know think Apple will sell 25 million iPhones next year. Those are some big numbers, considering that 50 million of the wildly popular Motorola RAZRs have sold since its release in late 2004. – Charlie White

An anonymous reader writes "With the Apple WWDC looming on Monday, the internet once again beats itself silly over what Steve Jobs has in store. At the most fanciful end of the scale, there's talk of the Apple iPhone, to which CNET says, 'keep on dreaming', and Gizmodo says, 'no visible evidence'. The only solid evidence of an iPhone, beyond the endless mocked-up images, is the discovery of hidden phone-related code in a recent iPod updater. Macrumors has some info on what the keynote may contain -- and there's no mention of an iPhone. So, as the rumor mill continues to grind over the weekend, let the predictions begin. Is there an Apple iPhone, or is there not?"
