Considering how many Subaru nuts browse these pages, it may come as no shock the company is preparing its first boxer diesel engine. Still, the company announced in Paris it would have the first horizontally opposed oil burner ready for the Geneva show next year. The torque produced will likely be epic (rally, anyone?), Subaru says the high compression pressure requires significant crankcase engineering, but that having the crankshaft and turbo under the cylnder block makes for low center of gravity. Earlier this year, Reuters reported the first European diesels would appear in late 2007, but the company didn't release specific production plans in Paris.

Our main man Zerin's got the hook up for us this AM with some hot-ass hatch pics -- and that big booty appears to belong to the 2008 Subaru WRX with the upward-extended yet not lengthwise-extended rear-end. Like we reported last October, it'll be based on the Subie's B5 concept and a departure from the power wagon form factor of old. But that's the looks -- what about the brains? Dubspeed's thinking it'll have a 2.5-liter H4 turbo with an output of 330 hp or higher. We don't know about all of that, but we do know it's a rapid form-factor departure for the Impreza.

We -- and the rest of Europe's motoring press -- be getting our first view of the facelifted Subaru Legacy Outback, which went on sale in Japan earlier this year. Once described as "aggressive blandness" (hmm) the new design will appear in the continent's forecourts in the fall, when the new model arrives for sale. We'll see it in the states in '08. Robert Farago once vividly pointed out that the grille of the Subaru Tribeca SUV resembled part of the female anatomy taken to wing. Whether or not you think that's a stretch (Dr. Rorschach, call the front desk), Subaru has decided its propeller grille is out of style and in need of alterations. Australia's Carsguide is reporting that Fuji Heavy is eliminating the style from the next Impreza, due next year. The move, which will likely affect the next Tribeca as well, suspiciously corresponds with the resignation or firing of ex-Alfa designer Andreas Zapatinas, though the company says he wasn't responsible for interpreting the company's aerospace past in the fascias. We'd once heard a rumor that Subaru brass had become obsessed with Farago's comment, though whether that had anything to do with the decision, we'll never know. [Thanks to John for the tip.]

Scoobieheads from Shinjuku to Birmingham to Tejas Noches will be clinking cider glasses today, celebrating the 40th birthday of their beloved boxer engine. It was back in '66 when Fuji Heavy rolled out the Subaru 1000, a pea-sized four door sedan with a single-liter, four cylinder boxer engine and front wheel drive. That configuration would evolve over time to include the tech-heavy powerplants of today, but would retain the symmetry, neutral balance and close-as-dammit-to-equal weight distribution throughout. Apparently, Fuji Heavy Industries' Japanese plants are pretty much maxed out, leaving their Lafayette, IN plant as the the only facility where production isn't wheezing along at a clip that'd nearly burst a locomotive's boiler. Of course, they are tooling up out there to crank out 100,000 Camrys a year, so how much additional capacity for production of Imprezas, Legacies and their bretheren can they have? Probably not enough to bring back a proper BRAT, which is rather sad, because the Baja was a wholly lame substitute. [Thanks to Scott for the tip.]
