We consider the problem of fair two-party computation, where fairness (informally) means that both parties should learn the correct output. A seminal result of Cleve (STOC 1986) shows that fairness is, in general, impossible to achieve for malicious parties. Here, we treat the parties as rational and seek to understand what can be done.
Asharov et al. (Eurocrypt 2011) recently considered this problem and showed impossibility of rational fair computation for a particular function and a particular set of utilities. We observe, however, that in their setting the parties have no incentive to compute the function even in an ideal world where fairness is guaranteed. Revisiting the problem, we show that rational fair computation is possible (for arbitrary functions and utilities) as long as the parties have a strict incentive to compute the function in the ideal world. This gives a new example where game theory can be used to circumvent impossibility results in cryptography.http://eprint.iacr.org/2011/396

We put forward the new abstract framework of "hard algebraic set systems" that allows to construct efficient chosen-ciphertext secure encryption schemes under computational (rather than decisional) intractability assumptions. Our framework can be instantiated with both RSA and Die-Hellman type assumptions, but in itself is completely abstract.http://eprint.iacr.org/2009/142

In the model of perfectly secure message transmission schemes (PSMTs), there are $n$ channels between a sender and a receiver. An infinitely powerful adversary $\A$ may corrupt (observe and forge)the messages sent through $t$ out of $n$ channels. The sender wishes to send a secret $s$ to the receiver perfectly privately and perfectly reliably without sharing any key with the receiver.
In this paper, we show the first $2$-round PSMT for $n=2t+1$ such that not only the transmission rate is $O(n)$ but also the computational costs of the sender and the receiver are both polynomial in $n$. This means that we solve the open problem raised by
Agarwal, Cramer and de Haan at CRYPTO 2006.http://eprint.iacr.org/2008/421

On the video, Savage stated that the show was unable to produce an episode about previously known RFID vulnerabilities due to a conference call to Texas Instruments that unexpectedly included several credit card companies' legal counsel. TI (via a spokesperson talking with cnet.com) stated that only one lawyer was on the call and that the majority of the people on the call were product managers from the Smart Card Alliance (SCA) invited by TI to speak. Then Savage (via a Discovery Communications statement) reaffirmed that he was not on the call himself and that the decision was not made by Discovery or their advertising sales department but rather MythBuster's production company, Beyond Productions."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Meer: A Note on Bounded Chosen Ciphertext Security from Black-box Semantical Security, by Ronald Cramer an |

IACR Eprint Archive | 2006-11-13 05:16:23
Designing public key encryption schemes withstanding chosen
ciphertext attacks, which is the highest security level for such
schemes, is generally perceived as a delicate and intricate task,
and for good reason. In the standard model, there are essentially
three well-known but quite involved approaches.
This state of affairs is to be contrasted with the situation for
semantically secure encryption schemes, a much weaker security
notion that only guarantees security in the absence of active
attack but that appears to be much easier to fulfill,
both conceptually and practically. Thus, the boundary
between passive attack and active attack seems to make up the
dividing line between which security levels are relatively easily
achieved and which are not. Our contributions are two-fold.
First, we show a simple, efficient black-box construction of a
public key encryption scheme withstanding chosen ciphertext attack
from any given semantically secure one. Our scheme is $q$-bounded in
the sense that security is only guaranteed if the adversary makes at
most $q$ adaptive chosen ciphertext queries. Here, $q$ is an
arbitrary polynomial that is fixed in advance in the key-generation.
Our work thus shows that whether or not the number of active,
adversarial queries is known in advance is the dividing line, and
not passive versus active attack. In recent work, Gertner, Malkin
and Myers show that such black-box reductions are impossible if
instead $q$ is a polynomial that only depends on the adversary.
Thus, in a sense, our result appears to be the best black-box result
one can hope for. Second, we give a non-blackbox reduction from bounded chosen ciphertext security to semantic security where the length of the public/secret keys and ciphertexts drops from quadratic to linear in $q$, compared to our black-box construction. This latter scheme, however, is only of theoretical interest as it uses general NP-reductions, and our blackbox construction is in fact much more practical.http://eprint.iacr.org/2006/391
