Zoals we gewend zijn bij nieuwe modellen, staan de tuners weer in de rij. Zagen we pas nog een door Abt getunde Volkswagen EOS, ditmaal is het JE Design die zn tuning kunsten op de EOS los laat.

Lots of V-dub watchers were shocked when the company hinted it would be moving on to the Golf VI as soon as 2008. It seems like a quick cycle to those of us in the US who just started seeing the new Rabbits on the street last month. But the V will have been in Europe for five years by 2008, and that means it's time for a change. AutoBild predicts the re-aranged Golf will take styling cues from the current Jetta, bringing the two models back into parity. Expect a US version in time for the Great Arctic Meltdown of 2011.

Tell me what you don't like about yourself, Mr. Touareg. Your eyes? Yeah, we can make you look just like your sister Eos. What are we on about? More shots from a recent spy dossier have been published, this time on AutoExpress, ahead of the new SUV review at the Paris show in September. They show the extent of the new Touareg's nips and tucks. Under skin, word is a new load-management system will help the porker rearrange its bulk while under duress. Let's hope the attention carries over into the quality-control realm, which made the otherwise stellar Mr. T a service-department queen.

BONN - Het Duitse kartelbureau heeft sportwagenfabrikant Porsche de toelating gegeven om zijn aandeel in Volkswagen te verhogen tot 25,1 procent. Het is zomer dus de cabrios komen tevoorschijn. De Volkswagen EOS is één van de nieuwkomers en ik moet zeggen dat ik em al verassend veel zie rijden. Zal dus wel goed zitten met de verkoop. Wil je je echter wat meer onderscheiden dan heeft Abt een sportief pakket klaarliggen.

There are more than 600 über-exotic Porsche Carrera GTs in North America. My buddy Scott estimates there are between 30 and 40 first-year (1962) Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type IIIs on this continent -- and he asked me to help him rebuild his. Luckily, for the both of us, the rare two-door is badged a Type III because it uses the same 1493cc engine found in Beetles and buses of the time.
The car in question was a daily driver until five years ago, when "something" went askew in cylinder #2. Since Scott had a Squareback to fix up in the interim, the funky Karmann sat waiting -- until now. On one of the hottest, most miserable Los Angeles afternoons in memory, we dropped and stripped the engine. We had two goals: ascertain why the bad cylinder had lost compression, and get it ready for an upcoming rebuild.
We wound up snapping a torque wrench trying to remove the fan bolt. However, for a mill that hadn't turned over in five years, things were in surprisingly good shape. We found no metal bits in the oil or stripped screws. Only a single bolt was seized, but Scott feels a bigger screwdriver will do the trick.
My favorite part of the day was checking out the factory tools Scott's collected. One is a flywheel lock, another a fan puller, both the height of pistonhead chic.
Perhaps even cooler than the car itself is the ancient but storied manual we consulted during the teardown, "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat (sic) Idiot." Written and illustrated by hippies in the R. Crumb style, it covers everything from proper gear speeds for various engines to where to bang to remove a stuck head, noting, "This is very important -- especially in San Francisco."
After checking out the book (and rubber-malleting the appropriate screws) we discovered the culprit was not, in fact, a bad piston (as Scott had hoped) or bum cylinder (as Scott had feared), but instead a "sucked" exhaust valve, possibly the result of a cracked head. The engine had been through at least one cheeseball rebuild (using rivets in place of bolts!) and much TLC will be needed to get it shipshape. Scott is also replacing the 1.5-liter cylinders, which pump out a paltry 54 hp, with 1.6-liter guys. The resulting 70 hp won't snap any necks, but should be plenty to motivate the one-ton-ish Ghia around town just fine for Sunday drives.
The car's original pastel green (still visible in the engine bay) and the repainted canary yellow both offend Scott's sensibilities. Luckily, black was a paint option back in '62.

Volkswagen's unveiled a fully self-driving hatchback that can take its meatware friends for a ride. Sporting a Byzantine system of sensors (radar and laser), sat-nav and software, the GTI can negotiate a race course, swerve through cones and hit speeds of up to 150 mph -- whether it can clear a mountain pass or navigate the Lincoln Tunnel at rush hour remains to be seen. An obvious reference to Herbie the Love Bug is not lost on the company's engineers, who've named the GTI "53 Plus 1" in honor of Herbie's racing number. Journos, like those at the UK's Daily Mail visited the company's Wolfsburg track and got to design courses for the robotic Herbert (c'mon, he's like 40 years old now) to follow.

Here it is, ladies and gents. Put your hands together for the, uh, Volkswagen Touareg. It's not scheduled for any radical changes, other than a couple of nips and tucks, a pop-up nav system, and some interior tweaks -- so don't expect an extra eye or additional limbs when you click through. Most significantly, it's losing the 3.2-liter base V6 in favor of V-dub's new, 3.6-liter mill, and the V10 TDI version is coming back in this fall, but will be withdrawn from five states with newly stringent emissions requirements for 2007 after the first of the year. (Selling cars is hard.) Edmunds's Straightline blog has the skinny on this particular fatty.

Forget all you've heard about the US not getting the new Golf/Rabbit R32 factory tuner -- or that some manner of "R36" was imminent -- says AutoWeek. VW reportedly confirmed the R32 will hit these shores in 2007 a 2008 model. As we said of the European model, introduced at the Frankfurt show last year, "The 2006 R32's 3.2-liter V6 gets a 10hp boost, via FSI technology (that's direct injection to the acronymically challenged), to 247hp. A Haldex AWD system doles the power to the four corners like a meth-addicted croupier. A DSG autoshift box is a $1,600 option in the UK, and reduces zero-to-62 mph times to 6.2 seconds from the manual's 6.5 seconds." Hot hatch-o-rific.

We normally wouldn't be covering this at all -- but gosh darn it, if it involves VW's "Fast" we're on it like white on rice...unless the rice is brown...then...well, you get the point. Anyway -- Volkswagen just snagged some major award-age with a win over Adidas (and 620 other opponents) for the "Sales Promotion Grand Prix" at the Cannes Lions International Ad Festival. Apparently the Promo Lions ad thing is new this year -- but from what we hear -- it's pretty cool an American company won -- and even cooler that it was automotive-related. Well, if it's highly implausible for a win by the US team in the World Cup -- at least we'll always have Cannes. U-S-A! U-S-A!

De fusie tussen de Duitse autofabrikanten Volkswagen en Porsche, voorgenomen in 2009, loopt vertraging op. Dat maakte Volkswagen donderdag bekend. De samensmelting, die gepland stond voor het einde van dit jaar, kan niet worden voltooid vanwege een aantal juridische kwesties. In februari gaven de twee al aan dat de fusie vertraging zou oplopen, onder meer vanwege een strafrechtelijk onderzoek naar oud-topman Wendelin Wiedeking en oud-financieel directeur Holger Härter. Hun wordt onder meer marktmanipulatie verweten.Volkswagen en Porsche blijven bij hun voornemen om te fuseren, maar de lopende onderzoeken maken het onmogelijk om de economische risico's van de fusie te kwantificeren. Daarmee is het volgens Volkswagen ook onmogelijk om de waarde van Porsche vast te stellen. Dat cijfer is nodig om de ruilverhouding van de aandelen van beide concerns te berekenen.

Suzuki stopt samenwerking met Volkswagen
De Japanse autoproducent Suzuki zal de samenwerking met Volkswagen beëindigen. Suzuki wil dat Volkswagen haar belang in de Japanse automaker verkoopt, zo maakte Suzuki vandaag bekend. Het besluit volgt op een verschil van mening over het beleid van beide kanten. Volkswagen houdt een belang van 19,9 procent in Suzuki sinds december 2009. Suzuki heeft 1,5 procent van de aandelen in de Duitse automaker.De autoproducenten zagen de samenwerking als een kans te profiteren van elkaars kennis in hybride auto's en technologieën voor kleinere voertuigen.

Suzuki wil bemiddeling in ruzie met Volkswagen
De Japanse autofabrikant Suzuki wil een bemiddelaar in de arm nemen om een einde te maken aan zijn alliantie met de Duitse branchegenoot Volkswagen. Dat maakte het bedrijf vandaag bekend. De twee autobouwers werken samen sinds 2009. Volkswagen nam toen een belang van bijna 20 procent in Suzuki. Het idee was dat de twee bedrijven zouden profiteren van elkaars kennis en kunde op het gebied van hybridetechnologie en het bouwen van compacte auto's.In de praktijk is daar evenwel weinig van terecht gekomen. Suzuki zegt dat Volkswagen niet alle beloofde technologie deelt. Ook zouden de Duitsers tegen de afspraken in zaken doen met andere partijen.Daardoor is de liefde danig bekoeld en de Japanners, die de alliantie inmiddels zien als een bedreiging voor hun zelfstandigheid, dringen er al een tijdje op aan dat Volkswagen zijn belang verkoopt. Dat weigert het Duitse bedrijf tot dusver echter te doen.
